Wanted to give a couple updates about what has been going on lately round the ranch lately, and what you can expect to see unfolding in the next couple months.
Traffic, sales, and new user registrations have all grown more this October than we have seen since early 2009. Between word of mouth referrals, plus some opportune mentions in Lucky Magazine and Reader's Digest, it seems that ever-greater volumes of buyers are starting to remember Bonanzle as the best destination for finding everything but the ordinary. Given that much of the recent growth has been in Google traffic, it seems that, on the whole, the changes Google made in September have benefited Bonanzle sellers in Google Product search. Keep filling out those item traits and keyword-rich titles, ladies and gentlemen.
Also very close to being up are the first couple applications using Bonapitit, the Bonanzle API. Debuting sometime in the next couple weeks will be a Bonanzle iPhone application (oooh!), and a version of Scott Pooler's Bonanzle Webstores using Bonapitit (aaah!). In the last week, we've added the ability to insert or edit items via Bonapitit, and in the next couple days we'll also be configuring Bonapitit to be able to grab completed transactions. I'd bet these developments will spawn some nifty inventory management tools over the next couple months. I know that I'd personally like to see a developer come along who can offer a quality WYSIWYG editor for our sellers to use, and a tool that makes it simpler to import CSV/inventory files to Bonanzle.
Listing counts, perhaps? It seems that something of a friendly competition has unfolded over the last few months regarding the Powersellers Unite listing counts of Bonanzle and various other marketplaces. Those who have spent any time following this chart know that the numbers have a way of stopping, starting, and growing suddenly at periodic intervals. Our take? While this chart is certainly an interesting resource that sellers & marketplaces are lucky to have (we heart PSU), ultimately we don't believe it serves our users' best interests to aspire to top it. As such, we have been implementing an increasing number of measures to trim down inventory in cases where we can trade quantity for quality. Amongst these changes:
Combine this with our already-implemented measures limiting duplicate imported listings and inauthentic items of any sort, and the net impact of these changes will likely be that Bonanzle's order in the PSU chart remains equal to or lower than its current position for the foreseeable future. But we think its a worthwhile trade to make for having responsive sellers whose items can be purchased with minimum hassle for buyers. If you're a responsive seller who pays your fees, these changes won't affect you in any way. (This would probably be a good time to reiterate that your items will not be reserved (=removed from site) without multiple advance warnings onsite and via email.)
Of course, the ever-increasing number of daily sales has also done its part to drive down listing counts. And we don't think that is such a bad thing!
Our focus over the next couple months will be to flesh out Bonanzle with an emphasis on building a buyer shopping experience that is tailored around the type of item the buyer is shopping for (OK, I admit that is a bit purposely vague. But we don't want to ruin all the intrigue. This is going to be a very big deal). We think that giving buyers an experience that is memorable is the key to driving return traffic, and return traffic is the key to making strategies like marketing/advertising become financially viable.
We also intend to work with development partners to help create something akin to a Bonanzle "Apps Marketplace," where buyers and sellers can use helpful Bonanzle "add-ons" that enhance their experience without cluttering the main site. These add-ons could, for example, provide a custom shipping calculator tailored to a seller's needs. Or help a seller to track and optimize their ranking within Google Product search. Or help sellers build custom websites with their own shopping cart. With a functional version of Bonapitit driving third-party application development, we might never have to rely on our own creativity again.
P.S. Obligatory plug: Are you a new Bonanzler? Have you signed up for the Bonanzle Newsletter yet? Well, you should. It's more fun than playing with a barrel of monkeys and Adam Sandler at Disneyland. Click here if you'd like to give it a shot.

Very cool news…..
I am happy to see that there will be steps in place to curb the number of dump and run sellers….
Thanks Boyz….You’re the bestest!!……
niiiiice
WTG! It all sounds great!
This sounds wonderful. I’m looking forward to all these great changes. Thanks so much.
Sounds great, Thanks
Yes, sounds like a move in the right direction…quality is always better than quantity. And even more important is the aspect of accountability to the customer. I’m so glad to see measures being taken to insure the Bonanzle experience continues to be a positive one for those who come through our virtual doors~
I’m excited – good going fellows & thank you!
1. Can I now collect on the bets I made with others here that that iphone app and the webstores were up next?
2. Sellers who haven’t logged in for a couple months and do not respond to buyer emails will have their items reserved after a given number of warnings …..still gives an awful lot of slack needs to be tighter yet
3. emphasis on building a buyer shopping experience that is tailored around the type of item the buyer is shopping for …We think that giving buyers an experience that is memorable is the key to driving return traffic, and return traffic is the key to making strategies like marketing/advertising become financially viable.
Why does this sound so scary?? Almost sounds like ebay speak
4. So that we know NOW in advance.. are these add on apps going to be something we must purchase or buy by the month? This is very important for us to know now please
Quality over quantity, glad to hear it. I have had a couple of unhappy experiences with sellers who dumped their listings and never came back. Never responded to inquiries and in one case did not respond to payment on an item. Had to get it back from PayPal. Your plan should prevent this ever happening again and this is a good thing.
YAY!
I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to see something in the works to cut down on the dump & runners.
We are all working very hard to make this a truly quality site, and it hurts every one of us when even just 1 bad sellers sneaks in.
WTG Bonanzle Crew!
@sofy: benefit of the doubt, por favor?
The apps that could be developed (like webstores and iPhone stuff) aren’t being created by us, they’d be created by third party developers, who would choose the business model for their tools. Judging from what’s on eBay, some tools cost money, some have advertising, and many have neither. Just depends on the developer and what they’re developing. They are not going to be able to charge money if they haven’t created something that has true value to their customer.
I’m there lol ..sometimes we need more reassurance if one does not understand geek speak! If I don’t ask or make a comment it won’t get understood by me and many others. Just helps to dispel any assumptions
Sweet!
Over the next couple of months should make the improvements ready in 2010 – after the Christmas season.
Sofy, in other words, if the developer is one who believes in Open Source, there wouldn’t be an additional charge. Other developers like to get paid.
Exciting news…well done on the API! Ooook (hands out bananas all around)
First
“It’s more fun than…….Adam Sandler at Disneyland”
Lets not get carried away Bill come on lol
Second
“Our focus over the next couple months will be to flesh out Bonanzle with an emphasis on building a buyer shopping experience that is tailored around the type of item the buyer is shopping for”
I never understood the presumption that Amazon and eBay have when deciding what it is I am shopping for. If I were at Bath & Body works it would make sense that it inform me of any discounts/sales …. for their line of white tea and ginger because that is what I buy there in large quantities.
However, this is a marketplace comprised of about 18,000 separate sellers and some with multiple booths offering unrelated products. The range of available product types is huge even with our relatively small size. The breadth of item types available lends itself to Bonanzle having the potential to become a one stop shopping destination for anything a person needs (other than nude art of course)
So as a buyer my issues with a marketplace deciding what it is I am interested in on any given day is so beyond annoying. I cannot fully express how much I hate clicking into those sites to find myself bombarded with a bunch of crap that I am not looking for today 2 months after I bought what is being recommended to me. Worse on eBay counterfeits of brands I have previously purchased.
1) How does Bonanzle intend determine for me what I came to Bonanzle to purchase?
2) Has Bonanzle considered the liability of recommending products that it does not know the authenticity of the product or the reliability of the seller selling the product?
If I come to Bonanzle after having a good experience with a seller on Bonanzle giving me confidence in buying from another seller that Bonanzle is recommending to me and I open my package to find a counterfeit coach bag how do you imagine such an experience will effect my comfort level purchasing from a seller on Bonanzle in the future?
As a seller on Bonanzle do you think it is in my best interest for Bonanzle to be perceived as having that kind of responsibility in a transaction? Bonanzle will not only be a site where the buyer acquired a counterfeit coach bag Bonanzle will be the agent that suggested & encouraged the buyer to purchase the fake bag. In other words Bonanzle will tarnish its perception in the eyes of the abused buyer.
As a seller on Bonanzle it is in my best interest that Bonanzle keeps its nose out of transactions as much as possible, because once someone decides Bonanzle is selling counterfeits I lose as a seller on this site. If Bonanzle acquires a negative reputation Bonanzle will not have any value for my purpose here as a seller.
3) The situation with the absentee sellers has similar or equally negative effects for Bonanzle’s reputation as the counterfeits if Bonanzle unknowingly encourages buyers to purchase from sellers that do not respond, do not ship, or no longer have the item the buyer purchased
As a buyer when I hit submit payment I do so because I really want that product. I do not want to be told sorry I already sold that item. I do not want to make payment and never have my package shipped, because the seller didn’t even realize he/she received payment from a sale on Bonanzle. I want the damn item I hit submit payment to purchase.
If I had a good experience with one seller on Bonanzle that I found in a Google search and I pop into Bonanzle at a later time and on that occasion I am met with product suggestions recommended by Bonanzle and it turns out Bonanzle recommended a product/seller for an item I never received (reasons above) I don’t think I would feel to swell about Bonanzle leading me to a product sold by a seller that does not follow through. Assuming the buyer realizes they are buying from a seller that other than Bonanzle’s recommendation has no other relationship with Bonanzle.
Felicitations said she has experienced this on more than one occasion. Felicitations has a bond with this site and an understanding of the dynamics involved. For Felicitations the seller is at fault because she knows what Bonanzle is all about. However, someone that stumbled upon Bonanzle while searching the internet takes the leap of faith to purchase on a site he/she has never heard of before. If I submit payment for a product on a site I have never used and I do not receive my item for whatever reason – no longer available, seller didn’t realize something sold…- well I don’t think I will go to that site and submit payment in the future.
Why do these sellers get multiple warnings? Really you are allowing these sellers multiple opportunities to hurt us all. I personally don’t appreciate being sacrificed to allow for other sellers to abuse numerous buyers negatively effecting Bonanzle’s reputation and by extension my own. I feel that Bonanzle’s considerations should focus on sellers that do not harm all of us in this one marketplace comprised 18,000 sellers/people many of which actually are active and who have bills to pay, kids to feed, and brows to have waxed rather than plucked hopefully again someday.
I don’t want these people to have multiple opportunities to hurt me. Why do you want to allow them multiple opportunities to hurt me? I’m here everyday, I respond, and I have the products I list (other than the 3 glitches that caused me to over sell and for one of those I could not find it elsewhere to buy and send. So I had to tell someone – for the first time ever – who trusted me enough to hit submit gee I’m sorry I don’t have that product. I know you really wanted it too, because if I had had it it would have been the last available on the planet. I know you are disappointed and will never come to my booth again…) anyway aside from any factors beyond my control I am an asset to this site. Why do you want to break down my value by allowing sellers multiple opportunities to harm me?
4) As for the offenses that can result in a seller having their items put on reserve
What does it matter how often a seller logs into Bonanzle? I know several people that do not spend all day every day on Bonanzle. I know sellers who only log in when they receive a notice something sold. I read a post a couple months ago written by a seller who had forgotten he had listed his items here until he received a notice something sold. Not only did he follow through he started working his booth.
Point the frequency of login does not necessarily dictate the quality of the seller. So in my opinion, the seller’s last login should not be considered reason enough to put the seller’s items on reserve
I know it does not count for much, but in my opinion Bonanzle should only allow two opportunities for deviant sellers to harm us (Bonanzle, sellers, and buyers) 1- to point out the obvious (don’t list what you don’t have or if you are not on top of your business enough to know something sold) 2- eviction notice
This is the point where consideration of the seller’s profile to determine if it is a deadbeat seller or a victim of a system glitch or the item was damaged in someway would be needed for appropriate action to be taken.
Third
“custom shipping calculator tailored to a seller’s needs”
Would something like this be the solution to dealing with the calculated shipping deficiencies in our current shipping tool or an optional tool for enhanced customizations. In other words do you intend to enhance our current shipping capabilities or do you intend to wait for a developer to create one for sellers who use calculated shipping to purchase in order to be able to display accurate buyer attractive shipping prices as opposed to buyer deterring shipping prices?
Sorry so incredibly long, but that’s just who I am lol
Great stuff as usual. Thanks for keeping us updated.
Applause and bravo’s to you guyz!
I for one appreciate to crack down on slackers, for all it takes is ONE bad experiance to turn someone off this site.
Everyone needs to remember … QUANTITY is good … BUT QUALITY is FAR better.
People want GOOD items at GOOD prices with Friendly Fast service. Period!
Very cool. Any changes that allow for future marketing and advertising are the right way to go. I’m interested in seeing the new concept for bringing people back.
Love the WAY Bonanzle Operates! I’m VERY Impressed, and I’m VERY Grateful to BE Here! Keep UP the GOOD Work!
Sounds like we’re moving in the right direction. FYI, I’ve had a new, initially, anon, buyer make three separate purchases in the last week. She’s my first three-peat.
Thank you for all your efforts.
The dump and run sellers really bother me. On a personal level, because I have bought and paid for items and never received them, and on a professional level, if it happened to me it can happen to those coming from outside Bonanzle, and in my opinion, that just doesnt look good for any of the people who are really trying to sell here. I will be happy that they seem to be on the list of improvments here.
I always look forward to the new changes here and I do hope we can keep the momentum going and keep Bonanzle as a shining example of how to do e-business..
Please put some teeth into the Dump and Run policy. 2 months leeway is way too generous. If someone dumps and runs, they couldn’t expect to make sales so why allow their booth to remain live for up to 2 months. They don’t care, so why accommodate them? Especially at the risk of disappointing/losing potential buyers.
