What's New, What's Next: Early June Edition

If Bonanzle hasn't been updated for a week, it's usually safe to assume that either we've got a big update up our sleeve, or we're dead.  Luckily, this time is yet another instance of the former.

What's New

New for June 1st is a number of changes, but the most significant is a reformatting of search and the item show page to increase our emphasis on what sets Bonanzle apart:  the passion of our sellers to discuss their items and make deals.  Now, in place of the rather meaningless green "for sale" icon that had been shown with each item in the item gallery, we are using the real estate for information buyers want to know:  is the seller available to chat, and does the item ship free?

We're also going to be experimenting with giving some search precedence to items whose sellers make themselves available for chat (either by being logged in, or by setting up remote chat with Gmail or etc.)  It's going to take some tweaking before we get the results arranged just so, but we're aiming for search results to be ordered by relevance of search term (that is, how closely the item title/description match what was searched for), newness of item and whether seller is available to chat.  In that order.  It'll probably take a couple days of tweaking before the proportions are consistently correct, but we'll get there.

UPDATE:  Search has been updated so that it is optional to the buyer if they want search weighted toward online sellers.  By default, search is not weighted toward online sellers.  But if a buyer wants to shop for an item where they'll need advice on their transaction, or if they want to be able to negotiate or such, they can now choose to factor this in as a component of their search.

Another exciting new feature for sellers who imported their items from other marketplaces is our new "description suggestions" tool.  We're going to be firing it up tomorrow or the next day, and it will email you if it senses that there are improvements that could be made to improve the relevance of your item descriptions to Bonanzle (e.g., Bonanzle doesn't have "auctions" or "bidding" )

What's Next

We have a real cool improvement for the Bonanzle buying experience up our sleeve that we'll be unveiling within the next couple months.  Currently working to fully flesh out our innovation, and to increase the difficulty by which this particular Bonanzle-first feature becomes ubiqutious (as we've started to see happen with some of our earlier Bonanzle-firsts).  But we can't provide more details about that feature quite yet, other than that it'll be awesome, wink wink.

Features we can reveal that are currently on our plate include:  making the list of upcoming Bonanzas more relevant to a specific buyer's tastes,  providing more options for widget formatting, fixing the occasional cases where remote chat doesn't work, and whatever bugs/features are hot on the Next Up list these days.

Milestone Nearing

Ohbytheway!  Thanks to our legions of loyal sellers and supporting subscribers who have built our inventory to almost 2 million non-generic, hard-to-find, and generally out of the ordinary items.  I think that reaching such a milestone less than a year after leaving beta is doubly remarkable when you consider that this inventory is comprised entirely of small sellers... we actually removed 30,000 items from our last big booth (created prior to the 10k item limit) last week (btw -- sorry about that, would have hit 2m a few days ago if not for our meddling).  What we have left is a marketplace comprised of items sold entirely by smaller, and often passionate, sellers -- merchants that know their inventory, care about their inventory, and are working hard to answer questions and give buyers the best deal possible.

With a group like this supporting Bonanzle's buyers, it seems like it can only be a matter of time until our reputation as the premiere destination for buying everything but the ordinary is universally known.  Bravo, sellers!

Oh and another thing! WTG with the Bonanzle block party on Sunday! You guys beat the previous record for items sold in a day by like 20%!

What I find exciting is that Bonanzle is apparently run by people who are just as passionate about what they do as are we sellers ! It solidifies the feeling that this place is “for real” and here to stay! Thank you gentleman!

I like this idea! One of the things that I don’t like about the OBO option is that it can take a couple of days communicating. This can speed up a sell.

Bonanzle’s road is paved in gold and its going up. Iam loving Bonanzle.

Great changes. Love the idea of the search order and the suggestions on imported listings. Can’t wait to see the next round. Thanks.

It is easy to be a passionate seller when selling on a site that is run by the best….Thanks to all the Boyz (and gurlz ??) that make it happen…..

kathyseven says: 06/01/09 at 07:29:19

So that’s what happened when the numbers dropped. Thank you for clearing that up Bill.

We might even reach the 2 Million count today. We’re so very, very close.

Love the Descriptions Suggestions thing. We did need something to help sellers figure out that they need to clean up things sometimes.
Now if you could add something to a Newsletter about cleaning up “old” listings, that would be just splendid.

Thanks for all the improvements. It just keeps getting better and better!

I am so happy to be here and grow with Bonanzle. Thank YOU!

“giving some search precedence to items whose sellers make themselves available for chat”
Terrible idea. This is forcing sellers to compete for search ranking by making time available at Bonanzle’s insistence.
How will Bonanzle know if a seller is really available to chat and not just ticking a box and walking away for 72 hours?
Will DSRs be introduced so Bonanzle can oversee seller honesty with the claim of being available to chat?
If a buyer does not receive a reply from a “chatable” seller within 5 min, will that buyer be able to report the offending seller to Bonanzle?
What kind of punishment will be incurred by the seller?
I consider this to be one of Bonanzles very few, poor ideas.

By all means, have an icon stating the seller is available for a chat or to answer questions, just keep it away from the searches.
There is another site that loves to meddle with searches for the “buyer experience”. Nowdays, that experience is not very good.

Another problem:
“Free post”…….. there is no such beast. Either the postal charge is incorporated in the product cost or it is listed as a supplement fee. Either way, the buyer pays. Highlighting “free post” will just attract buyers to more expensively priced items, thus giving the appearance of a site with dearer priced goods………. not a particularly smooth move in this competitive selling medium.

jinx'stuff says: 06/01/09 at 09:42:30

I have to agree with steen1…sorry Bill….
I also think that the “shipping issue” should be fixed before these ideas are implmented….International sellers are already at a disadvantage ..now this … I guess we will be in the outfield

Tying the search with the seller being online isn’t fair. Not everyone can sit at their computer all day, especially small sellers.

Also, I like to see the postage & how the item is going to be shipped, insurance or not, up front (there is no thing as free postage)when I make a purchase.

Am glad that you are addressing the description issue.

BookbinEtc says: 06/01/09 at 10:57:50

Very interesting!

I’m glad to see the outdated descriptions being addressed.

As a Canadian seller, I too, would like to see the international shipping/search thingie fixed up. The shipping profiles don’t work for us, as they’re aimed at US sellers.

When we search for stuff, it’s defaulted to a checkbox that a new buyer wouldn’t notice, ‘ships to Canada’. I sell worldwide, and have shipping costs in every single listing, as well as a custom cat right at the top of my list, telling buyers I ship worldwide and combine shipping. But, if they don’t see my stuff because of the way shipping is set up, then I get no/few sales.

Oh, and since I’m here, thanks for making the bmails more readily accepted. I am, however, finding people are not reading my bmails, and are ending up not paying, possibly thinking I’m an unresponsive seller. I have one just today – accepted my counteroffer, yet didn’t read the email I sent him on Saturday regarding payment options. If he never sees it, he won’t pay, and I’ll have yet another NPB.

Brenda
ps – Bill, love your sense of humour.

Questions and comments can also be added to our ongoing thread:

STBThreadworks says: 06/01/09 at 11:55:30

We also have concerns about having to be online 24/7. We wish we could be exclusively on Bonanzle, but we cannot at this time. There was no advantage for sales when we DID subscribe. Now people who pay fees will be advantaged?

We love this place and want more than anything for it to succeed. We love and respect Bill and the team for opening up this opportunity. But, the answer for us cannot be selling everything for low prices. That was eBay’s model. We had to make the unhappy decision to drop subscriptions because sales weren’t paying for the fees. And we hated the eBay model where we were buried in visibility.

That being said, we are STILL here for the long run. We just don’t have that happy large circle of friends and family to blog, tweet, twitter, etc.

Thanks for your changes, some of them seem great. But being online 24/7 is awful for us because we are not able to be here as our only selling venue. That is asking us to be Brick & Mortar style selling with the store staff always at the counter. I check Bonanzle a dozen times a day, but cannot live on the sales we have received, and those sales were when we paid fees. Check our history if you want to see more detail.

StarvingPackrats says: 06/01/09 at 13:40:10

I like that The Boyz are always trying to improve Bonanzle. We may (or may not) like the ideas they offer, but you’ve gotta love their passion!

I like the Chat With Seller feature now being available on the item page. The booth chat window was great before, but this really hits the nail on the head, especially if your prospective buyer has cruised to your listing directly from an outside source, like Google.

I’m not too much in favor of the search results being weighted in favor of user ids that are either merely logged in or polling the Bonanzle system. I’m logged on quite a bit, and I don’t think it would be fair to sellers who cannot be regularly available OR to buyers who may be looking for a different sort of default weighting in their search results. When I shop here, whether the seller is online at the moment or even often has no impact on my purchasing decision.

IMHO.

eyecatchingbeauty says: 06/01/09 at 15:28:31

Hey all,

I bring answers for your questions.

“What will stop a person from leaving their browser open but not being online?” If you’re logged in, the site automatically assumes you’ve left if you haven’t moved in 15 minutes. If you’re connected via remote chat and someone messages you and we can’t get to your IM client, we then mark you as not online. Soon we’ll also close the last gap, if you have setup your IM client, and its online, but you don’t respond, we’ll also presume you offline.

“Does free shipping effect search status or search placement?” No.

“Do I have to keep 5 browser windows open if I have five booths?” No, you can setup all five booths to tie to the same messaging client, so you can just be available over IM.

“Will it be bad for non-OBO sellers?” I think not. Much of the time, a buyer just wants to ask the seller a couple quick questions about shipping or such, just to feel confident the seller is a real person. A seller is never obligated to accept outrageous offers.

“How will it affect premiere memberships?” Currently the premiere items are using the same weighting algorithm as the main items, that is, they’ll have greater precedence if the seller is online. We may re-evaluate that in the future. Regardless, all premiere items will still show up, it will just be a matter of ordering.

“What are we doing in terms of press releases?” We’ve designated May and June to be “development months” where we’re focusing on perfecting our feature set more than getting media attention. We’re still talking with press occasionally, but we expect to start making more of an active effort of it again in July. In the early parts of this year, we spent significant portions of time on press releases and media outreach, and it worked well for us.

“Sucks to your search ordering. Where’s the shipping calculator?” It’s coming. But much like better support for internationalization, perfecting details like these do not set Bonanzle apart from a buyers standpoint, so to spend weeks working on them (and in the case of the shipping calculator, it is real hard…) before we have built an experience that is uniquely memorable to buyers is to set our ceiling right where the existing eBay alternatives are, and we aspire to more. We want an experience that is memorable and differentiated, which we think is provided by real time interactions. As we continue to establish that experience, then I think we can more strategically spend time on building out some of the niceties like multiple shipping options. (And specifically, how to add multiple shipping options without cluttering our interface, which is sure to be a challenge)

Don’t want to make this post a gajillion characters long, so I’ll stop there, but hopefully this clears up some of the more common questions. See also my previous post in the thread, which Reen kindly reposted above.

Some of Bill’s answers to questions asked concerning the new features

ZiggyZool says: 06/02/09 at 09:04:54

Bill, I would just like to say Thank You! Thank you a million times over for always listening and then willingly implementing fair and equitable solutions for the community as a whole. check out the What’s New http://www.bonanzle.com/home/changelist list for June 1 "Setup search to let “buyers” choose whether they want to weight results toward online sellers or not"

I for one love waking up to surprises, when I log on the very first thing I do is read your What’s New Page. I like many of the changes you surprised us with yesterday. I especially want to say, Thank you for the “free shipping” icon, yes we all know that shipping isn’t free and perhaps it should read “shipping included” but, buyers are programmed already to see and understand “free shipping” for those of us who choose to factor shipping expenses into the price of our items- it is terrific that now buyers will know there is no additional expense to add to the cost of the item they want to buy.

I don’t want to write a book here since most everything has been covered in the forum threads referenced above so I’ll just say once again, Thanks, You ROCK! I know of no other venue where the community is privileged enough to have the benefit of knowing that the man at the top IS listening to all concerns, actually responding to the inevitable questions and then coming up with a solution that’s fair.

I also agree with others that tying the search visibility, so the visibility of my items, with me being online is an impossible task for most sellers and will drive me away from here.

Leaving a browser open on Bonanzle’s page here is no option if I am absent like sleeping or a day on vacation etc. It also gives a false picture to a buyer and will cause disappointments if seller is not truly present. Learn from Ebay, which is doing away with its Skype (which is comparable). ‘Live’ communication does not work on the Internet, unless it is attached to a ‘live’ event of limited duration like a ‘live auction’, ‘open house’, ‘conference’ etc. Trying to emulate a bricks and mortar store’s ‘liveness’ makes the ‘Internet store’ non-viable due to the added cost. An Internet store thrives from its ‘non liveness’ which offers buyers ‘lower cost items’ than at B+M’s, exactly BECAUSE it is sold ‘non live’.

I am a small seller and cannot afford the extra cost of having someone continuously online. If I would be required to do so, I would have to slap on an extra large margin on my prices to cover the cost and that would price me too high to compete with other sites. It will also price Bonanzle out of existence. You have mostly good ideas, but this is a really bad idea.

In general any idea that takes away teh control of a seller on his visibility, is a bad idea. Buyers shoudl not have the primary control of a seller’s visibility. If they do, it is in fact a way to give a byer control over a seller’s operations and therefore his costs. That in turn mean that someone who s totally ignorant about a seller’s costs, will drive those costs up. It is a form of increasing cost intransparency for a buyer. True improvements on a site should increase ‘cost transparency’ to a buyer, not the reverse. That way buyers are empowered to buy most efficiently, so get the best deal.

What I would love to see as ‘improvement’ is an actual follow up on the many new ‘content’ additions to existing item traits which I have suggested. This ‘content maintenance’ issue should be addressed first. Otherwise the ‘item traits’ are going to remain incomplete and lack the minimum content required for buyers to navigate.

Especially in the initial phase of new item traits, the content suggestions should be updated much more quickly. Maybe you need to assign and empower some ‘content pope’ for this? Otherwise sellers are now forced to dump the majority of their new listings in the ‘Other’ folder, which is really not desirable.

So please reconsider your priorities.

Peter
