Nifty NIF Updates

We've just added three new features to the new item form (NIF) that are worth a quick blog.

1. More room for your pictures

The standard size for Bonanza images is increasing from 125x155 pixels to 185x155 pixels.  This change came about as we have seen the availability of broadband internet explode over the last couple years, to the point where it's now possible to feature much larger pictures than would have been practical back when 20% of our users accessed the site via dialup connection.

We've also changed the default cropping mechanism so that your entire picture will fit in the 185x155 window, even if it is horizontal (previously, if a picture had the wrong dimensions, we would cut off the edges). This means that even if you've cropped your pictures specifically to the old 125x155 dimensions, you will still have the entirety of your picture visible (with white borders) in the new image dimensions.

2. Upload pictures en masse

Feel the surge of productivity as it flows through your veins, as six pictures upload all together

Uploading six pictures one-by-one is no pleasure.  So as of today, we are allowing you to select multiple pictures from your computer, drag them onto the new item form, and have all images get uploaded in a batch.   For those that use the NIF regularly, we think this should speed up the listing process significantly over the previous system.

3. Guess your category

Another painful part of listing a new item is sifting through three, four, or even five category dropdowns before you've found the right category for your item.  So we have launched a new category guesser that will analyze your item title and make up to 10 suggestions on the best category for your item.  When we guess right, you can have your item categorized in about 3 seconds rather than the 30 seconds it would have taken before.  And when we guess wrong, we can still use that data to make the category guesser get smarter and smarter over time.

Along with the recent speedups we've made in the CSV importer, plus improvements to how eBay imports are handled, we hope the net result will be a significantly listing process no matter which method you're using to add your items.

Upload pictures en masse. Thrilling news! Pictures are the most time consuming part of listing and making one aspect of it go quicker is such a great help! Thank you Bill!

AbbysAttic says: 01/11/13 at 12:38:26

Love the ability to load all 6 pictures at once. Need to start listing again. Thanks.

BlueBoy says: 01/11/13 at 13:02:00

GREAT! Load all pictures at once.
Terrific! Thanks

BookbinEtc says: 01/11/13 at 13:19:21

Great news! Thanks, Bill et al – the picture loading should be a real time saver.

I was wondering what was messing with my photos. After slaving to get uniformity within the old oblong space so that all my photos filled the oblong space fully and pleasingly, I find it jarring to see highs and lows – and the lows are my perfectly fitting photos in the old frame that are now seem SMALLER next to the towering ones that put back what I had cropped out.
…Seems this is what messed up my HPL? All the burns are restored [FILM NOIR]. Although the tall ones now look better rather than the item being shrunk to near oblivion.

So, now we will have high and low photos? What dimension will the cropper use? no uniformity?

Did this change in fact mess up everyone’s “burns”? [I thought at first the burns were back [restored] because my HPL became a Collection. Guess not?]

But PLEASE don’t mess with the Collections photo framing …please.

Also …to use the drag and drop in of six photos, don’t I have to have 2 windows open …??

Since you announced some time ago that our listing process was in sync with Ink Frog, how do apply that? Do I have to be on High Wire? [this would be mainly to upload photos for me. Unique problem because my photos are edited on a different computer, then uploaded to InkFrog and then if I want to use them on Bonanza I have to download them to this computer from InkFrog, upload to Bonanza.
Now, if there was a listing form for Bonanza on InkFrog…
??

Good feedback, thank you. For the questions:

Q. Seems this is what messed up my HPL?
A. I just had a look at your “Film Noir” HPL and it looked lovely (nice work!). If you are still having trouble, please send the details to support.

Q. So, now we will have high and low photos? What dimension will the cropper use? no uniformity?
A. Bill mentioned the cropper above, “We’ve also changed the default cropping mechanism so that your entire picture will fit in the 185×155 window, even if it is horizontal (previously, if a picture had the wrong dimensions, we would cut off the edges). This means that even if you’ve cropped your pictures specifically to the old 125×155 dimensions, you will still have the entirety of your picture visible (with white borders) in the new image dimensions.”

Q. Did this change in fact mess up everyone’s “burns”? [I thought at first the burns were back [restored] because my HPL became a Collection. Guess not?]
A. Not that we are aware of. Can you please send examples to us at support?

Q. Also …to use the drag and drop in of six photos, don’t I have to have 2 windows open …??
A. The photo upload works the same as it did except you are able to select up to 6 images vs. 1 when you upload images. The drag and drop feature should be the same.

Q. Since you announced some time ago that our listing process was in sync with Ink Frog, how do apply that? Do I have to be on High Wire?
A. You would need to sign up with Highwire. The only think you need to do on Bonanza is make sure your Bonanza email address matches the one you use on Highwire. The rest of the syncing takes place on Highwire.

BTW – you should take a look at how the photos now look on an item page over to the right under “See more items from XXXX’s booth…”

They are squashed and stretched sideways.

Still, this is a boon to fashion and other pics of taller items

bonanzamark says in response: 01/11/13 at 14:56:25

Thanks, we will have a look into that for sure.

AdventuresAndHobbies says: 01/11/13 at 15:04:04

1 – The multiple pic upload is great. I applaud this change.

2 – But, I have to agree with EclecticStuff on the “More items from” section on the right area of my listings. The photos are rather squashed and deformed in my booth. And I typically use a fairly standard picture size of 640 × 480 when I upload my photos. They do not show my products well to the buyer.

3 – The photos appearing in my booth’s main page also look considerably smaller than they used to. Again, not as good a presentation to the buyer.

What should sellers do about this? Or is there some bugs the team is working on that might fix the problem?

Thank you.

bonanzamark says in response: 01/11/13 at 15:16:01

Thank you AdventuresAndHobbies. Comments following your 2nd and 3rd points.

2 – But, I have to agree with EclecticStuff on the “More items from” section on the right area of my listings. The photos are rather squashed and deformed in my booth.
A. We are looking into those reports right now.

3 – The photos appearing in my booth’s main page also look considerably smaller than they used to. Again, not as good a presentation to the buyer.
A. We will definitely have a look at this too.

stitchncraft says: 01/11/13 at 15:16:01

When I look at my pictures in my booth some of them are flipped, but when you click on the item they are the right direction. For example the book Floral Stitches. Is this result of the above changes?

bonanzamark says in response: 01/11/13 at 15:28:06

Just may be. I bet it needs a little more polishing. Programming is having a look into this.

stitchncraft says: 01/11/13 at 15:37:40

Thanks Mark. I have about 4 items that are flipped on their side!

sparklemotion says: 01/11/13 at 15:44:48

With all our photos combined, we are… super happy These are welcome and long-awaited updates. Thanks!

Oh, and btw you forgot a word: “we hope the net result will be a significantly _____ listing process…”

collectiblecorner says: 01/11/13 at 16:08:29

I’m thrilled that we can now bulk upload our images! But tell me please, when does that take effect? I’m doing some listing this afternoon and I’m still having to upload one at a time.

bonanzamark says in response: 01/11/13 at 16:09:51

It’s already live! Just select 6 images vs 1 when you go to your “My Computer” to select the image. Hold down your CTRL button and select the six images on your desktop.

johngermaine says: 01/11/13 at 16:26:27

Thought you had been tinkering again, my pictures loaded slower’n molasses today. Figured I better come find out what you had done.

collectiblecorner says: 01/11/13 at 16:27:28

Thanks Mark, it lets me upload but tags the first 3 photos each as the Main photo and then doesn’t include my 1st photo when the listing goes live. Think I’ll hold off on listing any more till the bugs are worked out but THANK YOU! Been waiting a long time for this feature

HavensRainbow says: 01/11/13 at 18:16:58

Excellent, great job!! I’m so happy about being able to upload more than one photo at a time!!!!

jdsgiftshack says: 01/11/13 at 18:34:42

I have some pictures that are bigger then others….I dont care for the pictures showing in various sizes…is there a way to make it so they are all showing up the same?

bonanzamark says in response: 01/11/13 at 19:42:30

We are working on polishing the new features. Stay tuned

Tortuga says: 01/11/13 at 19:45:45

Yay…upload en masse! I must return to listing soon

EclecticStuff says: 01/11/13 at 20:31:37

Mark – no need for a support ticket. It can be seen right on my [and other member’s] HPL’s. There are now tall and short photos where there had been same height perimeter photos.
Wish I had taken a screen shot of Film Noir!

For example, the 3rd photo of the “This Gun For Hire” WAS cropped by the old system] to uniform size. Yes, some of the top and bottom had been cropped out, but it looked better for thelist. It is now skinny and towers over the other photos.

I had “burned” a number of the photos [about 10] – all the burns have been restored today.
Example: “Black Retro Vintage 1940’s Look Blazer Sz 2” I had burned out the gold background. Today it is back.

Example:“Van Raalte vintage Midnight Black Slip size 32” I had burned out the crinkly blue background. Today it is back.

Have no idea if this is just an HPL thing. I don’t have any burned items in my booth to compare except that what I had CROPPED out of height is now back. This new height thingy is restoring original crops, I imagine where I and other sellers did not save their crop as a “new” photo or however that was worded.

These photo changes do not seem to have affected the Collections at least as for size. I prefer them with the burn outs restored and the uniform cropping.

AdventuresAndHobbies says: 01/12/13 at 05:03:34

Mark, thank you for checking on the two concerns I noted above.

I just looked at my booth this morning and the “More items from” section is totally missing now. I also looked at some other random booths and the section did not appear. I assume this may be due to the team’s efforts to fix the “squashed photo” problem. I appreciate your efforts.

I was checking our booth looking at these changes and noticed something strange. We have 1 day handling set in our booth for all items, yet our handling speed up in the top right little information window for buyers is set at Medium. You can’t get faster than 1 day handling. I don’t understand where that Medium speed for handling is coming from. Our booth settings are overridden by ? what?

bonanzamark says in response: 01/12/13 at 11:11:35

If you click on the rating, you will be able to drill down the specific transactions and their rating. If you need further assistance with that please contact us at support.

SAT morning, my booth pictures are fantastic, I like the new look

BARNTIQUES859 says: 01/12/13 at 11:13:49

my forum post, now sending it to support: you have turned my pictures sideways. I can not edit them and turn them back up because in edit they look correct. Last time this happened it took months to fix 1800 items. I had to retake the photos. I just can’t do this again. Please turn my photos back upright. This may be the straw that breaks this camels back. Meanwhile I am Paying for Google adwords for people to come see this embarsment. This problem is nowhere rectified. and please dont tell me it is my server or some such nonsense

bonanzamark says in response: 01/12/13 at 11:31:34

We just replied to your support email Barntiques859. We will be uploading fixes on Monday. We did not upload the fixes on Friday because our staff was limited this weekend and we wanted to monitor the fixes. Thank you for your patience and support, we super appreciate it.

tillingtraders says: 01/12/13 at 11:28:20

Mark, it appears that one sale where it required special handling caused a three day delay. That seems to be where the rating is coming from. Our selection for 1 day handling for the account doesn’t appear to be showing up as the standard handling time. We ship same or next day on almost every item we sell on any venue. Been awhile since we did here, but still, that shouldn’t affect the option for 1 day handling in account settings.

tillingtraders says: 01/12/13 at 11:30:11

Barntuiques, just looked at your items and they all look right to me in my viewer.

CollectMisc says: 01/12/13 at 12:01:09

So we have launched a new category guesser that will analyze your item title and make up to 10 suggestions on the best category for your item
It works VERY well based on your title. Wonderful idea!

BARNTIQUES859 says: 01/12/13 at 15:16:53

Tilling are you serious, did you see the sideways photos—i don’t think that looks good. can’t sit on a bench sideways LOL

TheCuriousPhoenix says: 01/12/13 at 16:30:34

The category guesser worked very nicely for me, although I’ve only used it once so far but was a real time saver.

Am going to go try out the new multi-pic loading, also a great time saver.

I know support is working on the issue, but just ringing in with that I hate how my booth pics are looking now. I haven’t found any sideways ones, but I have found some that the cropping changed and now it looks like the pics were taken from a room away the items are so little.

And thank you for not making these changes during the busy holiday shopping season. That showed a lot of consideration for us sellers and our buyers

One more thing, has anyone else been having trouble with doing searches? If you do a search, scroll up and down a couple of times, all of a sudden the Bonz ghost takes over and goes on a wild scrolling joy ride up and down and up and down at super speed, sometimes pausing, then returning to the wild ride.

bonanzamark says in response: 01/13/13 at 08:42:54

Re: search. Can you please forward the details to support so we can pinpoint the trouble and address? Thank you

achildstreasureplace says: 01/12/13 at 17:16:23

Thank you for speeding up the downloading of pictures. However, I would love to see the related items come back on the right side of a listing page. I have found it to encourage multiple item sales since most of my buyers come in through a search for one item. Also, I do not understand the three ISBN boxes for books. Only one is necessary. It slows down listing when my eyes have to jump over all the new and unnecessary boxes in the book listing frame.

bonanzamark says in response: 01/13/13 at 08:42:09

We want to see the related items back up too They should be back come Monday if not sooner. Thank you.

johngermaine says: 01/12/13 at 20:21:11

Well today I tried the mass uploader, it didn’t work most of the time and when it did, if I tried to move a picture it trashed them all or it deleted them so I went back to loading a picture at a time and got it done.

bonanzamark says in response: 01/13/13 at 08:41:20

Thanks JohnGermaine. We are aware of that happening and should have it corrected soon.

yippykiyea says: 01/13/13 at 00:22:27

Same thing happened to me JohnGermaine! And if I tried to move the pictures into a different order some of them got trashed and others just doubled themselves. Ugh, it felt like I was playing some twisted version of Cat and Mouse or something.

bonanzamark says in response: 01/13/13 at 08:41:43

Sorry for the trouble. We are aware of this and should have it corrected soon.

richknobsales says: 01/14/13 at 09:44:28

Barntique, I usually tag at least one of your items every day, and I have not seen screwed up pictures on any of your items. However, when I bring one of your items, I am missing the “other items” from you, consistently. This is coming & going on some of the other sellers when I’m trying to tag.

I have not noticed the ability to upload multiple pictures. I am looking forward to this!!! I have been cussing about how long it takes to individually upload, and I have wandered off and forgotten to finish listing several times.

As for categories – I’d be really happy if we could get the jewelry areas to have consistency from say pendants, to earrings. Seems like the same choices for gem types & colors should apply to all jewelry.

EclecticStuff says: 01/15/13 at 13:59:12

Right now there is only one cropper when uploading photos for a listing …right? to the new dimension. Any thought on having 2 croppers, one to the new taller dimension and keeping the one to the old oblong dimension with seller choosing on upload? [with photos that have already been cropped by the old cropper as the default on existing listings…]?

bonanzamark says in response: 01/18/13 at 09:30:45

Correct, one cropper

purpleiris says: 01/17/13 at 22:50:42

Just now getting to the blog and reading about all the new goodies y’all implemented while I was away. Since I’m late to the game, I don’t know if certain things have already been fixed, but I can say that everything looks great in my booth.

I instantly noticed when first logging in and looking at my booth and listing pages that the pictures were bigger, which I think is great! Actually, everything is great! I already tested the bulk image uploader and it worked just fine for me.

Although, I didn’t use the drag and drop method Bill mentioned. I just selected my three images and clicked Open (or just hit the Enter key — I use both methods with no problems). Now, I did drag and drop the second image into the first position after they were uploaded, which worked just fine, as well.

My ONLY concern is with the categories. I noticed that some subcategories were missing from my booth, specifically under the Home and Garden > Inside the Home category. Were categories also reworked in this process (ie, moved, changed, deleted, combined, etc.) or is it a glitch? Are there actually items that peeps can’t get to via the categories because they’re missing or…?

Please know I’m not complaining about it. I just wasn’t here when the changes were implemented, so am genuinely unsure about what happened to the categories. Also, is there going to be a problem with having access to all categories when adding new listings in case it recommends the wrong one? Considering that I seem to be missing some subcategories, I have to ask. Although, it could also be that I put all of my bedding on reserve and that’s the missing subcategory I’m picking up on (just thought of that LOL).

All in all…these are wonderful changes/additions, thank you! It’s nice to see such things that actually make listing and maintaining our booths easier. You Boyz and Galz are awesome!

crazyanniesstitchin says: 01/17/13 at 23:23:25

How about more categories…I am out of categories and still have tons more to add…so am at a limit and a halt on my business..I keep freeing up a few here and there by combining things…but can’t do to that many for what I need….lift the limit or increase the limit on the amt of custom categories you can add to your booth.

How do you upload 6 pics at once. I was doing listings earlier and did not see anything different on my screen unless I am missing something somewhere. I always upload more than one per listing so this would be helpful.
