Brand new factory sealed dvd. A superior shocker that got lost among the glut of early '80s slasher films and big-buck fantasies. The central character is a young amnesiac (Yugoslavian-born Zeljko Ivanek) who is taken to a psychiatric clinic after attempting to drown himself. He then establishes a telepathic link with a psychiatrist (Kathryn Harrold), which causes her to experience his nightmares. Ivanek, the 'SENDER' of the title, cannot control his powers; when one of Harrold's colleagues (Paul Freeman) subjects him to shock treatment, the result is that he begins to communicate telepathic images monstrous enough to disrupt the entire hospital. Visions of rats, roaches, flames and more unusual horrors are experienced without lasting physical harm. The clue to his condition ultimately proves to lie with his enigmatic domineering mother (Shirley Knight) who appears as an apparition (or ghost?) who fights Harrold for her son's love. The notion of telepathic communications is made skillfully visual -- it manifests itself in the hallucinations the recipeint undergoes -- and which, uncommonly, were executed practically on the set rather than in post-production. First feature for British-born director Roger Christian who was the art director on 'Alien' and set decorator on 'Star Wars'.
