Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)
Location: Ylang Ylang is cultivated in the Comoros, Java, Madagascar, the Philippines, Reunion and Sumatra.
Extraction: Steam distilled from the flower petals.
Colour and Odour: The essential oil is clear with a hint of yellow. It has an intensely sweet and heady scent with an exotic quality.
Description: The Ylang Ylang tree grows to a height of 7.5-18 metres. The flowers are deep yellow in colour with thick petals. These are picked early in the morning for distillation to obtain the essential oil. "Ylang Ylang" is a Malay word meaning "flowers of flowers"
Background: The flowers were used by the native women in Indonesia to perfume their hair. Ylang is often mixed with coconut oil; this concoction was sold as the famous "Macassar" hair oil during the Victorian era. The flowers are also spread on the beds of Indonesian newlyweds on their wedding night.
Properties: Evocative, euphoric, sedative, hypotensive and aphrodisiac.
Uses
Respiratory System-Excellent for slowing down abnormally rapid breathing.
Nervous System-Indicated for stress-related disorders.
Skin- Has a soothing effect and is especially good for the face and for oily skin types. Ylang can balance the secretion of sebum.
Emotion- Pacifies the mind can help dispel stubbornness and anger.
Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)
Location: Frankincense grows wild in the deserts of Somalia, Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia.
Extraction: Steam distilled from the gum-resin.
Colour and Odour: The essential oil is colourless with a warm, balsamic, spicy aroma that is dry and fortifying with sweet undertones.
Description: A small tree, it has small leaves and pale pink flowers. The whole tree has abundant resin that exudes a milky juice which hardens to "tears" on exposure to air. The solid "tears" are then collected.
Background: Frankincense was among the earliest incenses, with, 3000 years of continual religious usage. Valued as highly as gold, it was long used by the Egyptians for religious and ceremonial purposes, mentioned several times in the Bible.
Properties: Antiseptic, sedative, tonic, anti-inflammatory, expectorant.
Uses
Respiratory System-Slows down and deepens the breathing, ensuring calm and comfort. Very useful for asthma.
Skin-Rejuvenating for the skin; especially good for ageing skin and wrinkles, and for preserving a youthful complexion. Effective for healing wounds and scars.
Emotion- Helps reduce tension. Frankincense calms and is ideal to use prior to meditation.
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)
Location: Rosemary is cultivated in the Balkan states, England, France, Morocco, Portugal, Russia, Spain and Tunisia.
Extraction: Steam distilled from the leaves.
Colour and Odour: The essential oil is colourless and has a warm, sharp, refreshing and camphorous aroma.
Description: A small shrub growing to about 90cm high, it has long, straight stems, narrow pointed leaves about 2.5cm long, and small pale blue flowers.
Background: Important as an ingredient in a famous toilet water produced in 1370 and named "Hungary Water" after Queen Elizabeth of Hungary, who was reputed to have retained her beautiful appearance into old age.
Properties: Stimulant, antispasmodic, carminative, tonic, astringent, cleansing, diuretic.
Uses
Digestive System-Useful for indigestion, stomach pains, colitis and constipation.
Urinary System-Rosemary can help promote the flow of urine, thus helping alleviate water retention.
Circulatory System-It can have a stimulating effect on the heart; promotes circulation, can help normalise poor circulation and low blood pressure.
Respiratory System- Useful for colds, flu and bronchitis with associated coughs.
Nervous System-Excellent for the memory especially at exam times.Good for headaches, mental fatigue and nervous exhaustion.
Muscular system- Very good for rheumatic and muscular pain, especially tired, stiff and over worked muscles. Rosemary warms cold limbs, especially during winter, and is particularly good for rheumatism brought on by the cold.
Skin- A good skin tonic. Rosemary stimulates the scalp and can help promote hair growth. Excellent for scalp problems such as dandruff, greasy hair and hair loss.
Pine Needle (Pinus sylvestris)
Location: Pine grows in northern Europe and Russia.
Extraction: Steam distilled from the needles(leaves)
Colour and Odour: The essential oil is colourless and a strong, fresh and penetrating aroma.
Description: A large evergreen conifer tree growing up to 40 metres and having reddish, deeply fissured bark and long stiff needle-like leaves with pointed, brown woody cones. The tree exhales its essential oil into the surrounding atmosphere: it is an exhilarating experience to walk through a pine forest breathing the crisp fragrance.
Background: Long known to the ancients, pine is now important for producing timber and turpentine. Its medicinal value was known to the Arabs, Greeks and Romans. An excellent air freshener and disinfectant.
Properties: Refreshing, deodorant, strongly antiseptic, expectorant and stimulant.
Uses
Respiratory System: Very good for colds, catarrh and sore throats. Eases breathlessness and helps to clear the sinuses. Pine is especially helpful for hay fever.
Muscular System-Relieves muscular or rheumatic pain and general stiffness.
Emotion: Promotes feelings of energy and well-being. Helps with loss of concentration, mental fatigue and emotional weakness
