FRANCES "Franya" COLEMAN (20th Century: British):
Frances Coleman is an artist from Hampshire England, working mainly with watercolors but also acrylic and mixed media. She likes to experiment with textures and colors. Her work often includes beach and seaside related paintings. She tends to have different styles, including traditional, contemporary, naive and colorful.
She has works in many galleries and collections in Europe and the US, and often takes part in Pine Walk Outdoor Art Exhibition in Bournemouth Gardens.
She also has been instumental in helping othe artists in achieving notarity that might not otherwise have had the opportunity. Most notable among these would be the Mexican artist Feliciano Bรฉjar Ruรญz.
Ruiz was a Mexican artist and artisan, best known for a style of sculpture called โmagiscopiosโ which involved various materials along with crystals and/or lenses to play with light or create distorted visions. He was completely self-taught as an artist. His art career began in New York, where he had traveled and lived for a time in "Hellโs Kitchen".
His art later drew the attention of Arthur Ewart and Frances Coleman.
Frances was instrumental in helping him have his first exhibition and her husband helped sponsor his time in Europe. The magiscopes arose from an intense interest in light and the sun, which began when he saw a boy in Italy playing with reflections of the sun in puddles. Images of the sun appeared in his painting and sculpture, developing into the use of crystals and lenses. The surviving magiscope are very sought after today.
