ST. NICHOLAS MAGAZINE, Jan. to Dec. issues, 1924 The Century Co., 1924 Condition: Very Good to Near Fine in Very Good hard covers Two hardbound volumes containing all 12 issues of ST. NICHOLAS magazine for 1924. More than 1,300 pages of children's fiction, poems and articles, accompanied by an abundance of illustrations and photos. Most notable about this year was the debut of A. A. Milne in the magazine. He contributed 15 poems and verses to these issues, including "Teddy Bear", which many say was Winnie the Pooh's first appearance in print (though he is called "Teddy" and "Mr. Edward Bear" in the poem). It first appeared in England in Milne's first book of poetry, WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG earlier in 1924. This is likely its first U.S. publication. The same may be said for the other poems here. There are also two early poems by Faith Baldwin and one of the last by Kate Douglas Wiggin. The issues contain some ads and the Oct. and Nov. issues even include the color covers. As with other two-volume sets of ST. NICHOLAS available from this booth (1921, 1922 and 1923), the issues have been wonderfully preserved in the hard covers and must have been handled by very careful children. The covers have some corner and edge wear, but are securely bound.
