Biography
George R. Spratto served as Dean of the School of Pharmacy, West Virginia University from 1995 to 2006. During his tenure at West Virginia, he also served as Interim Director of the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center for one year. Prior to Dr. Spratto’s move to West Virginia, he was a faculty member at Purdue University rising through the ranks from assistant to full professor and then served for eleven years as Associate Dean for Professional Programs. While at Purdue, Dr. Spratto also served as an Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology in the Indiana University School of Medicine, Lafayette Regional Medical Program. Dr. Spratto graduated from Southington (CT) high school, earned his B.S. in Pharmacy from Fordham University and his Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Spratto completed a six-year term on the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and served as its president for three years beginning in 2006. In 2009, Dr. Spratto was awarded the Distingished Service Award from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy and in 2011, as an alumnus, he was named to the “Wall of Honor” at Southington High School in Connecticut.
Dr. Spratto’s research interests were in the area of CNS and endocrine pharmacology. He served as course master and taught in the pharmacy pharmacology courses at Purdue for over 25 years. Dr. Spratto and a co-author have authored a drug reference guide for nursing students and nursing practitioners for thirty-five years. Dr. Spratto has served as an evaluator for pharmacy programs in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia and also as a consultant for the Ministry of Higher Education, Saudi Arabia. In addition, he helped start a new pharmacy program at the Oman Medical College, Muscat, Oman. Dr. Spratto serves as chairmen of the ACPE – International Commission whose function is to assist international stakeholders related to quality assurance and advancement of pharmacy education.
