Item description
There are just over seven pounds of paper records here, most of which are physical plans in manila envelopes. There are blueprints and regular plans, a few invoices or purchase orders, a couple of manufacturer's instructions. They are mostly in decent shape for the age and not much is anything like brittle but some have picked up a little dirt and dust. Most of the plans themselves have been kept in the envelopes though. The papers here cover decades from the 1930's through the 1980's and cover various additions and the installations for such. It seems they had a lot of fans and boilers and steamers and that kind of thing.
The American Cigar Company Norfolk division of The American Tobacco Company buildings were added to the national historic registry in 2009. The building went up in 2003. I don't know the exact year they stopped production but a manufacturer's letter shown here indicates they were still adding equipment in 1980. A photo of the site as seen from Princess Anne Road in Norfolk is reproduced below. It is the kind of place that would make a great indoor antique mall if they could ever get rid of the tobacco aroma. There is a Wikipedia page but there isn't much there. Of interest to collectors interested in historic American cities or American industry both.
