Item description
This is a mini biography of the last president of the Comonwealth and the 1st president of the Republic of the Philippines, MANUEL A ROXAS (May 28,1946 - April 15, 1948). ROXAS was the president when the United States granted the Philippines its independence on July 4, 1946.
His believed that the country's economy will benefit from close trade cooperation with America. He instituted the Bell Trade Law which gave Americans rights to own property in the Philippines. He supported the retention of the American Military bases. But his government was criticized for its intolerance in dealing with the communist, banning from the office of representatives known Communists LUIS TARUC and JESUS LAVA. These two went to the mountains and led the HUKBALAHAP rebellion.
