'FLY TO HAWAII' by Clipper - PAN AMERICAN WORLD AIRWAYS, The System of the Flying Clippers. The backside of this poster has this interesting history: In 1929, Inter-Island Airways - today better known as Hawaiian Airlines - began flying between the islands and in 1935 Pan American World Airways established a regular route with its China Clipper, a so-called flying boat made by Boeing. With the arrival of large-capacity airliners, especially the "Flying Clipper", traveling between Hawaii and the American West Coast became 18 hours by plane versus 6 days by ship at about the same price. Two main airline companies, Pan American Airways and United Airlines, battled fiercely for passengers and several of their posters have been preserved, often featuring the Clipper and its post- WWII cousin the Stratocruiser.
