Chapter 1: It was more like home than any other place he knew. After long service with a destroyer division in the midst of the weltering miseries and hatreds of the Near East, Lieutenant Commander David Magowan had been ordered to the Naval Academy at Annapolis for shore duty as one of the staff of instructors. His own four years as a midshipman had begun to seem rather distant, although he still rated himself as a fairly young man. In the bachelors' mess of the Officers' Club he found congenial quarters. Here were old friends whose yarns recalled the hard and hazardous cruises in the war zone, convoy duty in the Bay of Biscay or bucking the winter gales off the Irish coast. (#0000880)
