Item description
"The Boy's Life of Colonel Lawrence?
Lowell Thomas
New York: The Century Company, 1927
Original publisher?s decorated green cloth. Illustrated with full page black and white photographs inserts.
An exciting narrative covering the events of Lawrence of Arabia in the war against the Turks in World War I. Written for young readers by Lowell Thomas, the reporter/journalist who was largely responsible for T. E. Lawrence?s rise to fame by his lectures and writing about his association with Lawrence in the Arabian adventure.
This book was published in 1927 by The Century Company and is a first edition as indicated on the verso of the title page without notices of any other printings. There was an expanded edition printed a few years later by Appleton-Century Company (formally Century Company).
The book is in very good plus to fine condition with the inserted black and white photographs. There are no book plates or writing in the book. There hinges are firm and unbroken. Truly a superior copy of a rather uncommon book that usually shows up worn.
The front free endpaper is inscribed to ?Matt? and signed boldly in fountain pen by Lowell Thomas.
The dust jacket has the imprint of Appleton-Century Company from an expanded edition apparently printed in 1935 by the information given on the front jacket flap. The jacket is bright and was unnecessary reinforced by the previous owner with paper tape as shown. There?s a Mylar jacket protector on the jacket and I took the photos with that on the jacket.
Laid into this book is a 4x5 glassine negative envelope that contains the negative that was, apparently, used for the photograph of Lawrence and Lowell on the front of the jacket cover. This negative shows three people and the third person was ?cropped out? for use in the book?s front cover and one of the interior black and white photos. A red adhesive tape runs across the negative as shown.
I used to use 4x5 Graphic cameras and this appears to be the original negative. Looking at the bold inscription, the way the dust jacket has been preserved from fade and tears, and this negative laid into the book, it can likely be a strong assumption that the book was inscribed with this negative of T. E. to someone Lowell Thomas held dear.
The inscription by the reporter/adventurer/journalist Thomas who was largely responsible for creating ?Lawrence of Arabia? as a world-wide figure in a scarce jacketed book about Lawrence with an original negative depicting both Lawrence and Thomas make this unique.
