` ~ Voodoo Priestess Estate ~ 8.25" Silver Sheen Obsidian Meso American Chief Carving A Main Ballroom Altar Find ~!~ This is another of our very long listings with an abundant text and 8 photographs, so please take your time and read the write-up through. If you have come this far, we feel you will find it was worth the wait. Twenty-four and a half years have now passed since we were called to do the estate that had been closed up for seventeen years! The Voodoo Estate! This type of call usually gets us excited as they are a treasure trove. Located here in Florida, there was no electricity or running water so we rigged our own lighting and in we went. If you have ever seen the Adams Family you will have some idea as to what we were greeted with! Then the attorney handling the liquidation gave us some background. The estate had belonged to an alleged powerful Voodoo Priestess/JooJoo Exorcist, grand daughter of a Marie Laveau, and favored daughter of a Marie Glapion. These names meant nothing to us, but the late night talk of Voodoo and exorcism in the old mansion was enough to make us decide to spend the night in a hotel and return in the morning to assess the estate. The rest is history. Our research has shown that this woman was what she claimed and was indeed descended from a long line of well known Vodoun family originating in New Orleans in the early 1800's. We were pretty unnerved by this until we discovered they were also devout Catholics! Although I have to admit this was unlike any Catholic home we have ever been in and some of the items found inside were a little more than disturbing. There was no feeling of dread or unwelcome in the mansion, however there was quite a bit of contraband and other items we can or will not sell here. This is one of a few pieces from this estate we will be listing this week, so check our other postings! We will, upon the new guardian's request, issue a named Letter of Authenticity with each lot from this estate, complying with the terms set forth to us by the estate's attorney. Some Back Story Found buried in a pile of jewelry on the Main Altar in the Main Ballroom, which was the largest if not the most ornate of all the altars in this estate. It was here in the Main Ballroom that the large ceremonial gatherings took place. There is no inventory or journal mention of this carving that we have been able to cross reference and attribute. This is not unusual as our own attempts at inventory, identification and attributing the items found at this altar has proven to be a monumental task. There were piles of items that had apparently been tossed at altar and left to accumulate over the years. We literally had to shovel them up in some areas to cart them out of there. Most of these items have gone unattributed due to lack of mention in her journals and inventories. We believe the carving was most likely a gift offering, brought by a visiting practitioner that was placed at this altar, as indicated by those items that we have been able to attribute. The Guest Book to this altar room has thousands of entries which read like a who's who of metaphysical practitioners, dating back to 1910 with a total of 6842 from 1979 to the ninety days following her death. ~!~ The Chief Examination reveals a vintage silver sheen obsidian carving depicting a Meso-American chief. It is most likely a mid 20th century Mexican carving by an unknown artist. It is a fairly common subject matter depicted in this medium from Mexico and can be found in a variety of sizes. This one measures approximately 8 1/4" in height x 3 15/16" x 2 5/8" at the base and weighing 4 lbs., 4 oz. The green felt base pads are original to this estate. Silver Sheen Obsidian Obsidian was no stranger to those associated with this estate as shown in the many entries in there journals concerning it. Some of these entires claim, "it will fulfill your hunger and provide an abundance of what is necessary." An interesting group of entries describe the use of obsidian arrowheads having, "smoke shaft and feather," claiming that she and her associates were able to invoke Ute deities into the smoke from (incense, sage smudge, pipe, or cigar) to form a shaft that would cause the arrow or lance to take flight and always hit it's intended target. The arrowhead materializing back on the altar, sans shaft when the spell was completed. She also notes of using obsidian as, "gaze and seance tools" noting, "proper frame of mind is required in addition to being well grounded and fasted (we believe this to mean 24 hours without food or drink). Holding it in the palm and massaging the stone then exhaling on it before using the reflective surface to view touched mirror or waters sidelong." This above mentioned, "mirror or water" quote is referring to touching the obsidian to the reflective surface of a mirror or liquid reflective surface. Later entries urge caution in making eye contact with unknown apparitions and caution the use of obsidian by, "the feint of heart and inexperienced." She also writes of apparitions appearing and taking up residence in and around these artifacts but claims, "they are passing." ?this is a very protective stone that forms an auric shield against negative energies from the environment and acts as a ward against psychic attack.? ?All of his obsidian is useful for scrying, and peering into the future.? ?use to clear the third eye and solar plexus chakra.? ~!~ The Chief here is of fine grind and polish, displaying natural black color and silver sheen. These pale silver inclusions are caused by patterns of gas bubbles remaining from the lava flow, and aligned along layers created as the molten rock was flowing before being cooled. These bubbles produced the interesting ripple effect displayed on this carving known as silver sheen. ~!~ It is certainly a nicely aged vintage obsidian carving with an extraordinary provenance that is much nicer than our photographer has been able to depict. ~!~ We have been contacted and visited by a number of people who were interested in the items from this estate since our first batch was listed. Among the buyers have been known psychics and practitioners. More than one, after adorning themselves or handling their purchase, stated "this is a woman of power!" Many of our customers, after receiving items from this estate have reported dream contacts and other unexplained phenomenon. Unusual, authentic Voodoo Priestess Estate piece and at a bargain price! This is truly a rare opportunity to own anything with attributes to this estate. The majority of this estate is now gone. Most of what we had left, and it was considerable, has been split up and sold to a couple of private, foreign collector practitioners and will never be available to the public again. We made the decision to do this as we have had some pretty strange visits from even stranger individuals and there have been enough unexplained phenomenon going on in the warehouse where her things were kept that many of our employees refused to go in there. The pieces offered and sold here are some of the few remaining pieces that will ever be offered to the public. N ice addition to any collection, wardrobe, altar, or decor, displays really well.
