Les Brown His Band of Renown ? Sentimental Journey CD
From The Best of the Big Bands Series by Reader's Digest Music
Audio CD | Released: 1999 | Label: Reader's Digest Music ? AAD S201B
Sentimental Journey with Les Brown is a 1999 Reader's Digest Music release featuring 16 tracks drawn from Les Brown and His Band of Renown's recordings, including classic performances with vocalists Doris Day, June Christy, and Jo Ann Greer. The disc is part of Reader's Digest's long-running Best of the Big Bands series, presenting a curated overview of Brown's signature sound from the swing and big band era.
Les Brown (1912?2001) led one of the most disciplined and commercially successful big bands of the twentieth century. His breakthrough came in 1945 with the chart-topping recording of Sentimental Journey featuring vocalist Doris Day, which became a multi-million seller and an enduring homecoming anthem for returning G.I.s. Brown's long association with Bob Hope ? serving as musical director for Hope's television and radio programs and 18 overseas USO tours ? kept the Band of Renown in front of audiences for decades. The Reader's Digest Downbeat polls named Brown's band the best dance band of the year five consecutive times in the 1950s.
This compilation draws on recordings spanning Brown's career, including tracks licensed from Hindsight Records, presenting the band's instrumental showpieces alongside vocal features for three of the era's finest singers.

Why This Album Matters:
This disc is an exceptional introduction to Les Brown's artistry, pairing his band's instrumental virtuosity with four of the big band era's most celebrated vocalists. Doris Day's recording of Sentimental Journey ? included here ? is one of the most culturally significant recordings of the 1940s, and her five tracks with Brown showcase the partnership that launched both careers into the mainstream. The disc also features two notable "salute" performances: Brown's version of At the Woodchopper's Ball pays tribute to Woody Herman, while September in the Rain salutes Guy Lombardo with Julie London on vocal. For collectors building a big band library, this Reader's Digest release offers a well-programmed single disc spanning the band's greatest moments, and pairs naturally with other entries in the Best of the Big Bands series featuring Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and Tommy Dorsey.
