Item description
This is a 1984 postage stamp from Laos (Lao People's Democratic Republic), featuring the country's national emblem used between 1975 and 1991.
Key Details
Country: Laos (identified by the text ????????? and "POSTES LAO").
Year of Issue: 1984.
Face Value: 2 Kip (indicated by the
in the bottom right corner).
Subject: The central image is the former Coat of Arms of Laos, which included classic socialist symbols:
Hammer and Sickle: Positioned at the top center, representing the workers and peasantry.
Red Star: A common symbol of communism.
Landscape: Depicts a forest, a dam (Nam Ngum), and a paved road, symbolizing national development and natural resources.
Rice Ears: Encircling the emblem, tied with a red ribbon.
Historical Context
This particular emblem was adopted after the Pathet Lao came to power in 1975. In 1991, the emblem was modified to remove the communist hammer and sickle, replacing it with the national shrine, Pha That Luang, though the general circular rice-stalk design remains in use today.
