August von Munchausen (Mid Century NY) Pastel on Paper Ballet Dancers, Signed
August von Munchausen the ballerinas from the Rue de Monte Carlo, and collected their ballet shoes. He was also a very good fencer who competed in an international championship.
August von Munchhausen was a student of Maitre 'd of Arms, Fred Rohdes, who was a ballet and fencing master in New York and owned/operated the Rohdes Academy of ballet and fencing, from the early 1940's until his death circa 1984
Mr. Von Munchhausen was a fencing student of Fred's and drew while at the Rohdes studio. It is probable, that August drew the ballet pictures also at the studio, using the other students as models.

2. Born in NYC.
3. Studied at the Art Student League in NYC.
4. He taught art in Paris.
A a document in the Library and Museum of Performing Arts in New York which tells the following about August von Munchhausen:
For over thirty years August von Munchhausen has been widely admired as one of the leading exponents of the spontaneous sketching of movement and dance. He has made an important contribution to dance history in the United States.
The Dance Collection owns twelve of August von Munchhausen's ballet studies (1941 - 1955) including portraits of Alexandra Danilova and Tamara Toumanova drawn from life, and impressions of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo's productions of RODEO and LES SYLPHIDES.
The RODEO studies were exhibited in 1976 as part of the Dance Collection's retrospective exhibit "A Decade of Acquisitions."
