Item description
THE DEVIL'S MARCHIONESS.
By William Fifield.
New York: The Dial Press, 1957.
First edition.
1957 date printed to the title page, $4.95 to the jacket's flap.
An historical, biographical novel of Marchioness Madeleine de Brinvilliers, wife of gambler Marquis de Brinvilliers, and lover of poisoner artist Godin de Sainte-Croix, who turned to her own evil ways and poison after King Louis XIV imprisoned Godin.
O. Henry Award and Huntington Hartford Foundation Awards winning Fifield, a professional radio script and Hollywood script writer, became a conscientious objector, then lived in Europe and France for forty years as a novelist, historian, biographer, and literary and artist interviewer.
This novel was based on Fifield's research and Madeleine's own personal journals and papers.
A nicely well-preserved vintage first edition gift.
Minutely rubbed to the shelf-edge of the front corner tips, else square, firm and near fine in bright red waxed linen over polished black linen boards with gilt embossed titles to the spine; in a very good plus dust jacket with Daniel Schwartz art, with tiny tears and rubs to the upper and lower spine edges, rubbing to the front spine fold and front flap fold, a few small minor creases to the front panel's upper shelf-edges.
The dust jacket will be placed in a clear, removable protective sleeve after scanning for this entry.
