About The Record:
H.M.S. Pinafore by D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, is a celebrated recording of Gilbert and Sullivan's comic operetta satirizing social class and naval life through witty libretto and memorable melodies. This version holds historical significance as one of the first full-length Gilbert and Sullivan operas issued on long-playing records after World War II, helping to revive and preserve the works in the modern recording era. Conducted by Isidore Godfrey, it features standout performances from company stalwarts like Martyn Green as the pompous Sir Joseph Porter and Darrell Fancourt as Dick Deadeye, delivering the traditional D'Oyly Carte style with clarity and humor. Fan-favorites include the rousing chorus We Sail the Ocean Blue, the charming I'm Called Little Buttercup, and Sir Joseph's iconic patter song When I Was a Lad. A unique aspect is its place in the authoritative postwar series by the D'Oyly Carte, the company founded to premiere and protect Gilbert and Sullivan's operas.
