Vintage Santo Domingo Kewa Pueblo and similar items

UP FOR SALE: Vintage Santo Domingo Pueblo (now Kewa Pueblo) Thunderbird pendant, commonly referred to as a ?Battery Bird,? dating to the Great Depression era, circa 1930s. These distinctive pendants were created during a period of material scarcity, when Pueblo artisans adapted by repurposing available resources. This example is constructed from hand-cut, sun-bleached bone or gypsum, turquoise chip inlay, and red hard rubber ? historically sourced from discarded automobile battery casings as a substitute for jet. The piece was hand-shaped and assembled using period-appropriate adhesives, consistent with known Santo Domingo construction methods of the time. The bold, geometric form and simple wire hanger are characteristic of Depression-era Pueblo tourist jewelry. While once dismissed as ?tourist? pieces, Battery Birds are now recognized as authentic expressions of Native American ingenuity and resilience during the economic hardships of the 1930s.
