Item description
For sale is a pair of authentic 1931 dental school teaching phantoms, used for operative dentistry instruction. The models feature real extracted human teeth permanently mounted in a heavy cast metal alloy base and display multiple period-correct restorations, including real gold inlays/foil work and silver amalgam fillings.
The metal bases bear a hand-scratched date ?1931?, consistent with common dental school practice for marking student coursework during the early 20th century. The restorations appear student-executed, with hand-finished margins and varied techniques typical of dental education in the late 1920s?early 1930s. The pieces are believed to be associated with a dental student named Louis Armann, though no original institutional paperwork accompanies the item.
Details
Date: 1931 (hand-inscribed)
Teeth: Real extracted human teeth (educational use)
Restorations: Gold and silver amalgam
Base: Heavy cast metal alloy
Use: Dental school operative teaching / examination model
Condition: Original and unrestored; shows expected age-related wear and oxidation consistent with historical classroom use
These teaching phantoms were produced in limited numbers for dental coursework and practical examinations and were rarely preserved. Examples with mixed restorations, visible student work, and a clearly dated base are increasingly difficult to find.
