Item description
The Ultimate 1950s RC Time Capsule: Sterling Chris-Craft Lafayette Electronics
In the world of mid-century hobbyist technology, few items evoke the spirit of post-war ingenuity like this complete Sterling Models Chris-Craft 50? Catalina Flying Bridge Cruiser set. Dating from the late 1950s, this collection is a rare documentation of the dawn of the electronic age, when hobbyists transitioned from static models to active, wireless command.
The Vessel: Sterling B-7M Chris-Craft Catalina
The centerpiece is a beautifully preserved 1/19th scale recreation of the legendary Chris-Craft flagship. In 1958, the full-sized Catalina was the height of maritime luxury. This model captures that elegance through meticulous wood-planked construction. At approximately 31 inches, the hull represents significant craftsmanship. The removable cabin sections offer a glimpse into the internal "engine room," where the original builder installed the period-correct electronics.
The Control: Lafayette "Super Teletrol" Transmitter (T-271 A)
What makes this set extraordinary is the inclusion of the original Lafayette Super Teletrol transmitter. Operating on the 27.255 MHz frequency, this unit represents the "single-tone" era of radio control. Unlike modern joysticks, the operator used a single button to "tap out" commands to the boat, a precursor to modern digital proportional control.
The Hardware: Lafayette F-256 Compound Escapement
Accompanying the transmitter is the Lafayette F-256 Escapement, remarkably still housed in its original box. In the 1950s, this was the "brain" of the ship. Since electric servos were not yet standard, this mechanical device relied on a wound-up rubber band to rotate the rudder. Finding an F-256 with its original packaging is a rare treat, as these mechanical components were typically lost or damaged over decades of use.
The Literature: "Model Control by Radio" (Gernsback Library)
Rounding out the set is the seminal text by Edward L. Safford, Jr. This book served as the essential roadmap for the builder, providing the wiring diagrams and radio theory necessary to turn a wooden hull into a functioning radio-controlled ship.
Collector?s Summary:
Together, these items represent a complete ecosystem of 1950s Americana. For the collector, this set offers rare provenance?a single-owner assembly where the boat, the radio, the mechanical hardware, and the technical literature all align perfectly. Whether displayed as a museum-quality piece of technological history or used as the foundation for a high-end restoration, this Sterling and Lafayette collection is a testament to the golden age of the American hobbyist.
