Item description
This vintage Japanese uchikake is a formal wedding kimono executed in richly colored red silk and decorated with auspicious imagery of cranes and flowering botanicals rendered in gold and silver embroidery. Traditionally worn unbelted over the bridal kimono ensemble, the uchikake is designed to trail behind the wearer, creating a ceremonial silhouette associated with longevity, fidelity, and prosperity.
The surface decoration displays a high level of technical precision consistent with professional workshop production. The embroidery appears to be machine-assisted, a common and historically appropriate practice for formal wedding garments of the mid-20th century, particularly those produced for ceremonial or display use. This does not diminish the artistic or cultural value of the piece; rather, it reflects the evolution of Japanese textile production during the Showa period, when advanced embroidery techniques allowed for exceptional consistency and durability in luxury garments.
Cranes?longstanding symbols of marital harmony and long life?are prominently featured alongside stylized floral clusters, arranged in a balanced, flowing composition across the garment. Metallic threads catch the light subtly, enhancing the visual depth without overwhelming the silk ground. The interior remains unpatterned, consistent with uchikake construction. Importantly, this kimono is numbered ?101,? marked on the garment, suggesting it was part of a controlled production, workshop series, or formal inventory system rather than an anonymous export piece. Such numbering is commonly associated with bridal ateliers, ceremonial wardrobes, or documented collections.
Condition:
Very good vintage condition. There is minor wear at one sleeve opening near the shoulder edge, as documented in photographs. No stains, structural damage, or significant losses observed. All embroidery remains intact and visually strong.
Construction Materials:
Silk ground with gold- and silver-toned embroidery
Fully constructed uchikake form, worn open and unbelted
Measurements (Approximate):
Kitake (length from back of neck): 69"
Yukitake (sleeve span from center neck): 26"
Sodetake (sleeve length from shoulder): 41"
Cultural Historical Context:
Uchikake garments became increasingly elaborate during the 20th century as wedding attire evolved into a highly symbolic and visually dramatic tradition. This example reflects that lineage and is well suited for study, exhibition, ceremonial display, or high-level costume use.
