About The Record:
SQ 4 Channel Sound : Quadraphonic, by Lafayette, is a compilation released in the early 1970s to showcase the innovative SQ (Stereo Quadraphonic) matrix system, developed by CBS Records to deliver four-channel surround sound on vinyl LPs. This album was significant for demonstrating the immersive audio experience of quadraphonic sound, a pioneering technology in the 1970s that aimed to enhance home listening by placing speakers at four corners of a room. It featured various artists and tracks encoded in the SQ format, highlighting the system's ability to create a three-dimensional sound field, though it faced challenges due to competing formats like CD-4 and QS, which confused consumers. The album's historical importance lies in its role as a promotional tool for quadraphonic technology, which, despite its initial excitement, did not achieve widespread commercial success due to compatibility issues and high equipment costs. Specific hit singles from the album are not well-documented in available sources, as it was primarily a sampler to demonstrate the SQ system's capabilities rather than a collection of chart-topping tracks.
