About The Record:
The Sea is a 1967 spoken-word album by American poet and songwriter Rod McKuen, featuring his introspective prose poems about the ocean, tides, and human emotions, recited over lush, atmospheric orchestral arrangements composed by Anita Kerr and performed by the San Sebastian Strings. It marked the inaugural entry in a highly successful collaborative series that continued with titles like The Earth and The Sky, blending poetry with mood music in a format that captured the era's fascination with introspective, nature-inspired easy listening. Historically significant as a commercial breakthrough for McKuen, whose gentle narration and evocative themes propelled the album to strong sales and critical acclaim, it exemplified the late-1960s trend toward multimedia artistic expressions amid the counterculture's rise, while solidifying Kerr's reputation as a versatile arranger beyond her Nashville roots. The album's serene, immersive quality evoked a sense of timeless escape, influencing subsequent spoken-word recordings and contributing to McKuen's status as one of the best-selling poets of the 20th century.
