About The Record:
Das Phantom Der Oper is the original Vienna cast recording of Andrew Lloyd Webber's iconic musical, featuring the German translation by Michael Kunze and featuring Alexander Goebel as the Phantom, Luzia Nistler as Christine Daa, and Alfred Pfeifer as Raoul. Released in 1989, the double LP captures the production recorded prior to its premiere on December 20, 1988, at the Theater an der Wien, marking it as the first German-language staging of the show outside the English-speaking world. This album holds historical significance as a pioneer in internationalizing The Phantom of the Opera, influencing subsequent successful productions like the long-running Hamburg version that began in 1990 and has drawn millions of spectators in German-speaking regions. The recording includes the full score with standout tracks such as Die Musik Der Dunkelheit (The Music of the Night) and Maskenball (Masquerade), performed by the ensemble in atmospheric orchestral arrangements. Among its hit singles, the duet Das Phantom Der Oper by Goebel and Nistler achieved notable chart success upon its 1989 release, boosting the album's popularity in Europe.
