Notes: Minor shelf wear, binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. Dr. Reuben N. Kesterson was born on July 12, 1858 in Claiborne County. He graduated from the University of Louisville Medical School Dental Department in 1883 and began his dental practice in Tazewell, Tennessee. When he moved his dental practice to Knoxville in 1887, it is believed he was the first college-degreed dentist to practice there. A short time after he and his wife located on Tazewell Pike their first child, Robert Neil, was born. When the young child died three years later, it would lead to the quest that would give birth to "Greenwood Cemetery, a place of perpetual beauty." In 1900 he purchased the 175-acre tract across Tazewell Pike from their home, and soon after little Robert was brought there to rest. As a crowning memorial for his son and his parents, who had also been moved to Greenwood, Dr. Kesterson commissioned a 45-foot tall marble obelisk to mark their graves. At the time it was erected, the shaft was the sec-ond tallest in the country ? second only to the 65-foot shaft at the gravesite of John D. Rockefeller in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio. There are a host of moving stories represented by those who rest in Greenwood, but none any more moving than the story of a parent's love for his child that brought it all into being. "Burials in Greenwood Cemetery constitute a veritable Who's Who of iconic East Tennessee individuals. Among those are Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court Edward T Sanford and eight past mayors of the City of Knoxville. Industrialists such as C. B. Atkin, George R. Dempster and William J. Oliver and mercantile giants like Sol H. George, James G. Sterchi and W.W. Woodruff lie at rest in their family plats. The charismatic Ellen McClung Berry and Fountain City's honorary mayor, Dossie Miller Cooper, lie in Greenwood as does Ada Lawhon, pioneering nurse and one of the first members of the Tennessee Nursing Association. The story of these and over seventy other prominent East Tennesseans is told in the engaging, well-documented prose of Dr. Marlin R. Hotle, the cemetery's historian, who is the noted author of seven previous books. Stories from Greenwood Cemetery is an excellent read and belongs on the reference shelf of everyone interested in local history." ?J. C. (Jim) Tumblin, 0.D., D.O.S. Fountain City historian
