Inspired by Alex Haley's novel Roots, the song draws from O'Connor's emotional response to the Mandinka tribe's story of oppression and resilience, which she connected to her own experiences of abuse and societal constraints in Ireland. Historically significant as an early showcase of O'Connor's raw, defiant vocal style and punk-infused rock energy, it helped establish her as a bold new voice in music, paving the way for her later controversies and triumphs.
