About The Record:
Sweet Charity, by Gwen Verdon, released in 1966 by Columbia Records, features the lively score by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields for the musical conceived, directed, and choreographed by Bob Fosse, starring Gwen Verdon as the optimistic dance hall hostess Charity Hope Valentine. Adapted from Federico Fellini's 1957 film Nights of Cabiria with a book by Neil Simon, the production marked Verdon's return to Broadway after a six-year family hiatus, opening at the historic Palace Theatre, which it helped restore as a premier stage venue. Running for 608 performances, the show gained acclaim for Verdon's Tony-nominated performance and Fosse's groundbreaking jazz-inflected choreography, shaping modern musical theater. Its historical significance lies in showcasing Fosse's distinctive style, blending vaudeville, burlesque, and modern dance, with its influence extending to a 1969 film adaptation starring Shirley MacLaine, where Verdon assisted with choreography. The tracks Big Spender and If My Friends Could See Me Now became hit singles, with the latter reaching No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in Verdon's solo recording.
