Item description
ONCE ON CHRISTMAS
by Dorothy Thompson
Illustrated by Lois Lenski.
New York: Oxford University Press, 1938.
First edition, THIRD printing.
Publisher's statement "first printing July 1938, second printing September 1938, Published October 1938" to the copyright page.
Endearing illustrations throughout the text, illustrated end-papers and cover and jacket art by the Newbery Medal winning illustrator, Lois Lenski.
Dorothy Thompson with her second husband, the Nobel Prize winning author Sinclair Lewis, had a son Michael Lewis, for whom this book is dedicated.
Thompson's lovely detailed memoir story of when she was seven, living in Hamburg, New York at Christmas time, as told to her son Michael when he was seven, prompts memories for all parents to tell their children.
As famous and influential a woman as Eleanor Roosevelt, Ms. Thompson was considered to be the one of the most quoted and respected women of her age, inspiring the film WOMAN OF THE YEAR from which Katherine Hepburn's character was based.
Thompson worked for the U.S. woman's suffrage movement, became an in demand journalist writing smart political columns, wrote the New York Times column LET THE RECORD SPEAK, personally interviewed Hitler from which she wrote I SAW HITLER, was the first American to be exiled from Germany by the Nazis, was a news commentator for NBC radio from 1936-39, wrote eighteen books, and so much more.
A very well preserved book in dust jacket.
Tiny surface nick to lower shelf-edge, else near fine in cream boards with red titles to the spine, with red bordered black-and-white illustrations by Lois Lenski to the front and rear covers, Lenski illustration patterned end-papers; in a very good, slightly age-toned dust jacket that mirrors the cover art, with a one-inch tear to the lower edge and a tiny tear to the upper edge of the front panel, and with minuscule nicks to the upper spine edge; original printed $.50 price still intact to the front inner flap.
We will place this jacket in a clear protective, removable quality Bro-Dart brand sleeve.
An enchantingly warm, illustrated children's collectible.
4.20 x 5.20; 33 pages.
