Item description
Charming 1940s handknit Cowichan-style sweater, likely made in Canada, featuring a whimsical Peter Rabbit fairy tale intarsia design. The front depicts the beloved bunny, while the back shows Farmer Brown, straight out of the classic Beatrix Potter story. A true one-of-a-kind (OOAK) piece, knit in 100% wool.
Possibly made as a large girl?s sweater, but it fits perfectly on a modern women?s size Small (shown on size 6 mannequin).
Condition
Good vintage condition. Clean and wearable with stretch. A few tiny holes and some wear to the neckband (a small chew at the back), but still delightful and sturdy overall.
Provenance Note
The Cowichan knitting tradition originated with Coast Salish knitters in British Columbia, later influencing many regional Canadian knitting styles. Sweaters like this, blending folk art with storybook intarsia, were often created as one-off projects, making them rare survivors today. The Peter Rabbit motif makes this sweater particularly collectible, bridging fashion, craft, and literary nostalgia.
Style Aesthetics
? Storybook cottagecore
