Item description
CIRCA 1948-2008, U.S. Army 108th TRAINING COMMAND, INITIAL ENTRY TRAINING, PATCH GROUPING OF 8, NOS
This unit was initially designated as the 108th Airborne Division upon its activation in 1948, and the patch was originally approved for it with an airborne tab. However, it underwent several redesignations over the years, including the 108th Infantry Division, before becoming the 108th Training Command (Initial Entry Training) in 2008.
The patch features a golden griffin on a red seven-sided polygon (heptagon). The griffin, a mythical creature combining the features of an eagle and a lion, symbolizes striking power from the air and strength on the ground, reflecting the unit's initial airborne capabilities. The heptagon represents the seven states where the division was activated.
The 108th Training Command is a United States Army Reserve unit, currently headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. It plays a crucial role in training, equipping, and deploying Drill Sergeants, ROTC Adjunct Faculty, and Cadet Summer Training capabilities.
The unit is also known by its nickname "Golden Griffons," directly referring to the prominent griffin on their insignia.
The initial designation as an Airborne Division faced challenges due to limited funding and resources for airborne training, equipment, and airlift support in the post-WWII era. This led to its reorganization as the 108th Infantry Division in 1952.
