SPANISH AMERICAN WAR, M1894, MILLS AND ORNDORFF, DOUBLE ROW, 100 ROUND, KRAG .30-40, CARTRIDGE BELT Original period manufacture. This is a woven, adjustable dark blue colored belt with 50 double loops which hold 100 rounds of Krag .30-40 caliber cartridges. Unit marked "CO M, 2nd Mo" (Company M, 2nd Missouri). The soldiers number "46" is also visible. This is a very nicely woven Spanish American War 100 round ammo belt, for the new M1892 Krag-Jorgensen Service Rifle. The design is essentially an adaptation of the earlier belt for the .45-70 government cartridges used by the Springfield Trapdoor rifle. Instead of having 50 large bullet loops, the belt has 50 double loops, each holding two rounds of ammunition. The weaving is good and solid, with all loops complete. The belt displays minimal use, with no rips, tears, and no fraying. Displays pleasing patina on all the brass elements. The belt is in excellent condition. The brass hardware on this belt is marked: ?PAT. MILLS ORNDORFF? ?AUG 26:67 MAR. 19:89? ?JULY 31:77 OCT. 31:93? ?DEC 28:80 SEPT. 11:94? Khaki belts were worn by State Militia and Guard units; the blue belts were worn by Regular Army, Federal units. The Militia was armed with the .45-70 Trapdoor, while regular Army units had the .30-40 Krag rifles. The Rough Riders and The New York State Militia were the only non-federal units to start off with Krag rifles, thanks to Teddy Roosevelt. Eventually, both Militia and Federal units in the Philippines used Krag rifles. The Khaki belts had 50 loops for 50 rounds of 45/70. The blue belt came out in 1895 with the new army regulations and new rifle the model 1892 Krag. The first ones had 50 loops, till it was discovered that 100 rounds of 30/40 Krag ammo weight the same as 50 rounds of .45-70. So, they started making them with 100 round loops. A very good example of the army cartridge belt that was kept in use by the volunteers right through the Spanish American War.
