Item description
U.S. Sale Only! I am moving and have greatly reduced the price to help cover moving expenses. For sale is a beautifully framed print of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who had a stroke while posing and died 2 1/2 hours later. The frame is brought to you by OFF THE WALL GALLERY of Kingsport, TN. The print is taken from the last portrait ever painted of President Roosevelt. And now for the back story. . . President Roosevelt's "love of his life," Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd, came to Warm Springs, GA to visit the president. They had been lovers during WW I, but his wife, Eleanor, found out and told Franklin that she would divorce him unless he stopped seeing Lucy, which he did. Fast forward to April 1945, and Roosevelt was vacationing at "The Little White House" in Warm Springs. He invited Lucy to join him. Lucy brought with her a photographer, Nicholas Robbins and her friend and painter, Elizabeth Shoumatoff. Mr. Robbins took photos of FDR over a two-day period, April 10th-11th, 1945. Satisfied with a photo of FDR with a cape over his shoulders taken on the 11th, Ms. Shoumatoff began painting the president the same day. The next day, April 12th, the president was sitting in a chair in his den, continuing to pose for his portrait when he complained of a severe headache in the back of his head. He immediately suffered a massive stroke and died with 2 1/2 hours. The portrait you will be receiving is a print of the painting Shoumatoff was in the midst of completing when the president had his stroke. Needless to say, all three visitors skedaddled out of there before they were caught by Eleanor and the press! Fun Fact: The original painting (the one that was not completed because of the stroke) shows FDR with a red tie, which is the correct color. Years later, Shoumatoff recreated the painting in full, from memory, this time giving the FDR a blue tie to delineate it from the original. You will see both versions on the Internet. The framed print is approximately 25 inches high by 23 inches wide, as measured by the frame, not the print.
