TOMBOY
By Hal Ellson.
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1950.
First edition, first printing.
Publisher's first edition seal and first printing code A to the copyright page, 1950 date to the title page, $2.75 to the jacket's flap.
Introduction by Frederic Wertham, author of SEDUCTION OF THE INNOCENT.
Ellson, a former social worker and nurse's aide at a mental hospital, heard numerous detailed accounts from juvenile delinquents there, and drew on those experiences for his very realistic fiction writing.
This well-depicted, tough novel of a girl called Tomboy and her juvenile gang, their culture, crimes and activities in New York City was the basis for the 1960 French film 'Wasteland'.
Some rub-wear to the corner tips and upper and lower spine edges, slight tanning to the spine and cover borders as usual, attractive book-reading book-plate to the inside front cover, else very good, square, and firm in polished, green-threaded cream boards with burgundy embossed titles and rules to the front cover and to the spine; in a about good dust jacket with front panel art depicting a smoking girl with braided pig-tails in a trashy alley, with small chips to the upper and lower spine edges and corner tips, rub-wear spots, tears, cracks, an tiny chips to a tanned spine panel, some rub spots to the front spine fold, age-toning, tiny tears and nicks to the upper shelf-edges; original printed $2.75 price still intact to the front inner flap.
The dust jacket will be placed in a clear, removable protective sleeve after photographing for this entry.
