CHIEF OF THE SIXES TO THE WIDE TRACK ERA: THEY BUILT EXCITEMENT Chief Pontiac (c1720-1769), a legendary figure in Native American history, headed confederation of the Ottawa, Ojibwa and Potawatomi tribes in an area surrounding the Great Lakes. In 1762, unhappy with English presence in the region, Pontiac organize( a massive rebellion that ultimately involved virtually every Indian tribe from Lake Superior to the Lower Mississippi. Known as Pontiac's Conspiracy, the rebellion wa ultimately a failure at stopping English settlement, but he has long been regarded as one of the most significant leaders in Native American history. The city of Pontiac wa named in his honor, and so was the Pontiac car in 1926. Known as the "Chief of the Sixes," that car was the result of a top-to-bottom Genera Motors reorganization under Alfred P. Sloan. Designed to solidify GM's hold on the, medium-price field, it was an instant success and Pontiac became one of the leading nameplates in the industry. Thirty years later, Semon S. "Bunkie" Knudsen combined performance and exciting styling to launch the most successful period in Pontiac's history?the Wide Track era In the years since, Pontiac has defined affordable excitement for millions America] driving enthusiasts. The GTO, the Firebird, the Trans Am, the Fiero and countless other models have more than justified the company's slogan: "We Build Excitement." This book covers the whole story?the cars and the people who created them?culminating in the 1992 Bonneville SE, SSE, and SSEi, and the 1992 Grand Am.
