Item description
Vintage postcard showcasing the Confederate Monument in Alton, Illinois, located at 635 Rozier Street. This 57-foot-tall obelisk commemorates approximately 1,354 Confederate soldiers who died as prisoners of war at the Alton Military Prison during the Civil War. Constructed in 1909, the monument features bronze plaques inscribed with the names of the deceased and stands as a rare northern memorial to Confederate soldiers. The site is maintained by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and is open daily from dawn to dusk.
The back of the postcard includes a clear indication that it was sold at the Mather Book Store in Alton, Illinois, adding a layer of local collectible appeal. This unused, unposted postcard with a chrome finish is a delightful example of mid-20th century American printed ephemera. Its standard size (approximately 5.5 x 3.5 inches) fits neatly into most postcard collections, especially those focused on Midwestern US locations or vintage linen postcards. A great addition for collectors of American regional memorabilia or vintage postcards.
