Helga Schneider writes a deeply honest recollection of the last time she ever visited her mother, who abandoned her children and, consequently, her role as a parent in favor of working as a guard at Auschwitz. Schneider gives her account of both her anxieties of seeing her mother for the first time in years and also memories of previous interactions and the scars they left. Written almost as a letter to her mother, Schneider's writing is intimate in a way that other memoirs are not. It's not just a reflection of her relationship, but a heartbreaking effort to try to both understand and forgive her mother for her brutality and absence in Schneider's life and childhood. "Let Me Go" is quite short, easy to read in a day or on an airplane, but it will change you and impact you in a way you never thought it could. I first read this staying at my Aunt's house, and within three hours I had finished it and knew I'd found my favourite book. I purchase this for friends and bought my own copy in both print and on kindle. I never want to be without it. I cannot express how wonderful this book is, nor do I have the proper words in order to convey the severity of my encouragement to purchase this memoir.
