Lawrence Butch Morris Format: Audio CD
Amazing music and conduction (R.I.P. Mr. Morris)
Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2013
I can't believe that nobody has written anything about this amazing album until now. Now is the time that i've just learnt that Lawrence D. "Butch" Morris has left us :(
This album reflects his concept of "conduction" (conducted improvisation)in a clear and inspring way with great original tunes and master musicians: Lawrence D. "Butch" Morris, conductor; john purcell, oboe; Zeena Parkins, harp; Myra Melford, piano; Jason Hwang, violin; Wayne Horvitz, keyboards and electronics; Janet Grice, bassoon; Marty Ehrlich, clarinet; J.A.Deane, trombone and electronics; Andrew Cyrille, drums; Brian Carrott, vibraphone; Jean-Paul Bourelly guitar; Vickey Bodner, English horn
Somewhere between "third stream" and "free jazz" those improvised and conducted originals are really great from the "Othello b" at the beginning to the "Othello a" at the end. Second cut, "The bartok comprovisation" is a gem with electronics. Third cut, "Via Tolciona" gives a smooth and magical sense of a Far East Asian voyage. And so on...
Rest in Peace Mr. Morris
And a quotation from the liner notes:
"Conduction (conducted improvisation) is a means by which a conductor may compose, (re)orchestrate, arrange, and sculpt both notated music. Using a vocabulary of signs and gestures, many within the general glossary of traditional conducting, the conductor may alter to initiate rhythm, melody, and harmony; develop form and structure; and instantaneously change articulation, phrasing, and meter. For example, indefinite repeats of a phrase or measure may now be at the discretion of the new composer on the podium. In this way conducting becomes more than a method for musical interpretation, but an actual part of the process of composition. Conduction is a viable musical tool for the improvising ensemble."
