This department has the distinction of being one of the oldest depatments in Portage County, being the fifth department to be organized in the country. 2001 is also the 86th anniversary of the founding of the Firemen's Association, which is currently known as the Firefighter's Association. The Fire Department and the Firefighter's Association have worked in virtually seamless harmony since 1915. The interwoven relationship that has been shared over the decades between these two organizations is responsible for much of the success that both organizations enjoy today. Although the Fire Department was not officially organized until 1901, the history of firefighting, and even more imporant, the history of fire in Mantua and Shalersville dates well back into the 19th century.
