THE ROAD TO SOMEWHERE A History of Baptist Hospital of Miami and the Kendall Community by Donna Knowles Born Introduction by Arva Moore Parks Thirty years ago, a narrow country road wound its way west, toward the blazing sub-tropical sunset. It had a name, North Kendall Drive, but people laughed and called it "the road to nowhere." In the fall of 1958, Kendall farmers noticed bulldozers leveling an old ranch and rodeo ring west of Galloway Road. When they heard that in its place, the Baptists were going to build a modern hospital, they figured somebody had made a mistake. When the elegant, Mediterranean-styled edifice began to rise in the wilderness they were shocked. Somebody had to be crazy to build what they soon called "the hospital in the sticks." Then with dazzling speed, everything began to change. Within a year after Baptist Hospital of Miami opened its doors on November 21, 1960, the southern link of the Palmetto Expressway was completed and work began on Dadeland Shopping Center. Today, more than 320,000 people call Kendall home and Baptist Hospital has become one of America's finest hospitals. To commemorate its 30th Birthday, Baptist Hospital has presented South Floridians with an impressive volume of text and photography that weaves the hospital's history into the fascinating story of Kendall and Greater Miami. Included are more than 100 photographs, many never seen before. Author Donna Knowles Born, herself a resident of Kendall, gives life to the chronicle of the creation of a modern hospital and adds much new material about the road from nowhere to somewhere. From the beginning of the beginning, when Kendall was considered worthless swampland, and practically given away by the State of Florida for 25 cents an acre, there were few takers. The true Kendall pioneers arrived with Henry Flagler's railroad and opened the Kendall post office in 1914 . They left their names and their imprint on the land. But even into the late 50s, Kendall had more four-legged residents than human ones. After diminutive millionaire Arthur Vining Davis bought up huge portions of the Kendall countryside, he convinced the Baptists , who had long dreamed of a Baptist Hospital in Miami, to build their hospital "in the sticks." The Rev. Dr. Roy C. Angell, charismatic minister of Miami's Central Baptist Church, had the faith and the vision to take Davis up on his offer of free land and other financial help. Today the word Kendall evokes thoughts of dynamic growth and Kendall's Baptist Hospital has built a reputation for excellence which is hard to beat. No one laughs any more.
