Notes: Minor shelf wear, binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. Frank W. Benson (1862-1951), an important member of the Boston School of painting and of the Ten American Painters, created a group of spectacular impressionist works between 1897 and 1920. Painted at Wooster Farm, his summer home on North Haven Island, Maine, these images combine the region's brilliant light and the open coastal landscape with views of the artist's family on summer vacation. Studied in-depth for the first time in this publication, they reveal an important and often overlooked aspect of Benson's career. The outdoor paintings are represented here by over 30 illustra-tions, half of them in color, providing a fresh look at this turn-of-the-century Amer-ican master. Three informative essays are included; John Wilmerding discusses Ben-son in the context of American painting in Maine; Sheila Dugan considers Benson's plein-air works and presents new informa-tion on their subject matter And technique; and William H. Gerdts examines the critical response to Benson's art, especially in comparison with that given to the work of his colleague, Edmund C. Tarbell.
