Notes: Moderate shelf wear, wear to edges, binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. Robert Foster spent three years distilling everything he experienced and thought about Hurricane Hugo... ...including his own anger at mis-deeds by groups and individuals during and after, and his awe of, and respect for, the finest brought out in others by this crisis. Foster's journal offers additional value that others have lacked, namely, an overview of subsequent published and personal views of others who were there. The media people who viewed St. Croix from their helicopters and from afar are described with disrespect and some-times contempt; often justifiably. You cannot really know what is going on in such a hurricane viewing things from a helicopter when the worst is over. Foster's journal is angrier in dealing with others on St. Croix than one might expect. Most of us would perhaps have become kinder and gentler in dealing with the often-greedy personal behavior and exploitation by both public officials and private individuals. Just as well that Foster has not. This is personalized writing by an individual who was frightened of death for himself and his wife, then became angry at people and things they did, and per-haps is still angry. Personalization gives insights and opinions substance, whether one may like them or not. There have been hurricanes Bob and Andrew and others since Hugo, but Hugo stands out as one of the worst insults ever by weather in the Caribbean. We are fortunate that he stayed on St. Croix to try to figure out God and Nature and Man, and to rebuild. By staying and writing so well and thoroughly about Hugo, we now know. -Richard Gallagher Contributing Editor, CREATIVE LIVING Bob Foster "The real story - a valuable chronicle of Hugo's power and Hugo's people." -Stan Stubenberg Longtime resident of St. Croix
