The cave was discovered during quarry works from Bruchmeister Ludwig Undeutsch on March 14, 1928. Economic interests and concerns about jobs had to be weighed, but a few days later, the continued existence of the cave was secured and it was released for the first visitors on 28 September 1928. This was associated with a scientific study of the cave by Alfred Uhlemann and Ernst manner. The results were summarized in 1929 in the Guide to the Dragon Cave. The increasing awareness of the cave allowed the further expansion of the public parts of the cave. The approximately 15 meters deep Karbonatkarsthohle extends over a total length of 550 meters. Of these, 350 meters are accessible to tourists. In the various halls of the cave there are several interconnected cave lakes.
