J.B. Crawford is a commercial fishing captain. In his youth in the historical village of Cortez on Florida's southwest coast, he worked with cotton seine nets and gill nets, used lime water to preserve the fibers, and hauled the nets with real corks by hand off skiffs and launches onto long net spreads to dry in the sun and open air. He gathered scallops at low tide in the Kitchen using a broom handle with a wire screen scoop tacked to the end and a small box with a glass bottom to look through and spot the little sea critters down on the grassy sandy bottom. Then he left the village, went to Gainesville and graduated from the University of Florida with an honors degree. He went on to earn two Harvard advanced academic diplomas. His career was in school leadership and he retired from education as a district superintendent in California. While he was gone, all the pot smuggling took place. He tells friends that he left Cortez too soon and came back too late. When he did return home, he owned and operated the Rachel, a deep-sea grouper boat. The crew always kept a sharp eye out for floating bales of green, but the heyday of marijuana millions had passed and they never came across any square grouper. He lives, fishes, and writes in Cortez today and is fully licensed for restricted species saltwater products.
