On provel na voennoj sluzhbe 4 goda i byl nagrazhden ordenom "Za oboronu Sevastopolja". Uzhasy, vypavshie na dolju zaschitnikov goroda, on otrazil v "Sevastopolskikh rasskazakh", prochitannykh povsemestno i doshedshikh do Aleksandra II. Imperator byl nastolko vpechatlen, chto povelel perevesti ikh na frantsuzskij jazyk i izdat v gazete Le Nord, kotoruju chitali na protivoborstvujuschej storone. Rasskaz "Kavkazskij plennik" byl napisan dlja "Azbuki" i vpervye opublikovan v 1872 godu. Sam Tolstoj vysoko otsenival etot rasskaz kak "obrazets tekh priemov i jazyka, kotorym ja pishu i budu pisat dlja bolshikh". Povest "Khadzhi Murat" byla opublikovana posle smerti Tolstogo i stala rezultatom ego lichnykh vpechatlenij i dalnejshikh issledovanij Kavkazskoj vojny. Takzhe v sbornik voshli rasskazy "Dva gusara", "Dekabristy", "Kazaki" i drugie.
