Esimesed lavastused pohinesid Jaan Kaplinski, Eino Leino ja Betti Alveri loomingule. Sealtpeale kujunes teatri pohisuundadeks eesti ja pohjamaade kirjanduse tutvustamine, kuuldemangud ja kirjandussaated Eesti Raadios ning meie kultuurilugu kajastavate etenduste andmine ka valjaspool Eestit. Variuse kaidud teest koneleb teatri juht ja lavatekstide autor Heidi Sarapuu kaesoleva raamatu eessonas, millele jargnevad kolm naidendit - "Klassikute prouad", "Viis kuud Vildega" ja teatri viimaseks lavastuseks jaanud "Tuhast tousnud teater". Neid lavatekste saadavad Variuse vaatlejate Pille-Riin Purje ja Peeter Kaljumae ning teatri toos osalenute kirjutised. Lisaks on ara toodud Variuse lavastuste kronoloogia. Koiki tekste ilmestavad Teet Malsroosi fotod lavastustest.
