Product description: In 1857, when young Isaac Sanger helped set up a small store in McKinney, Texas, he could hardly have foreseen that he was founding a business that was to make the name ?Sanger? famous in Texas and well known in the mercantile world. Yet from that beginning Isaac and his brothers Lehman, Philip, Alex, and Sam developed one of the most progressive and successful early businesses in Texas. Beginning as railhead merchants - merchants whose businesses moved with the expanding railroads - Sanger Bros. finally settled upon Dallas and Waco as permanent locations. In these cities they built a trade which expanded in volume and diversification as its buildings grew in size and elegance. With Isaac serving as purchasing agent in New York, Philip and Alex operating the Dallas store, and Sam and Lehman handling the store in Waco, Sangers? was truly a family business. Business historian Leon Joseph Rosenberg provides, in this volume, a study of the background and development of Sanger Bros., both during its period of growth and success and during its later decades of financial difficulties. He analyzes the business practices which led to its extensive achievements during the years of success. He also examines the organizational flaws which led the family business into serious problems in the early 1900s. Finally, he outlines the drastic changes which were required to salvage the firm and which ultimately led to its purchase in I951 by Federated Department Stores, Inc. Sangers? merger, in 1961, with another Dallas store brought into being Sanger- Harris, a firm which, with ten stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area...
