Originally published in 1941, this second revised edition, adds paragraph indentations, punctuation, chapter introductions, a historical introduction, and bibliographies. A detailed account of the lives of a young English immigrant couple as seen through both their letters while Frank served in the army as a noncommisioned officer, civilian employee, Union volunteer, and served in Mexico, Missouri, New Mexico, Kansas, and on the Sioux, Solomon River and Utah expeditions, and in war in Tennessee and Mississippi, until he died in 1862. After Frank's death Mary detailed her life as a military widow and struggling mother of five boys, to her Mother in Law, in letters.
