Item description
This object is an antique medallion or jewel belonging to the Knights of the Golden Eagle, a fraternal organization founded in Baltimore in 1872.
The medallion features a shield with enameled sections in red, blue, and green, bearing symbols and the words "FREEDOM," "CHARITY," and "FRIENDSHIP". The top of the medallion is adorned with an eagle figure.
Such medallions or jewels were worn by members of the Knights of the Golden Eagle to signify their affiliation with the organization.
The Knights of the Golden Eagle's rituals and symbolism were based on the events and legends of the Crusades. The organization was prominent in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in states like Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.
This medallion serves as a historical artifact representing the fraternal societies and their traditions that were prevalent in American society during that era.
